Days of Knights

On Sunday, I leave to be a counselor at Camp Kanesatake for a week working with teens. (Yes, I really want letters and emails. I shamelessly ask you for them! Click on the link http://www.mycampk.com/contact/1-way-camper-emails.  Send to Mary Sellers at Youth Quest 1 Cabin unknown)

Anyhow, as the theme is Days of Knights, I thought it would be fun to make a medieval costume. I've always wanted my own, and this seemed like a perfect opportunity to make one.

Yesterday morning, this is what my outfit looked like.

But today, here it is!

Yes, it's rather...um...voluminous.   (And I didn't realize my eyes were shut in the picture below until I transferred it to my computer as my eyes are squinty when I smile anyhow. And by that time, it was raining AGAIN, so I just went with this shot.)

I'm not sure what the best feature of this outfit is. The little bellhop hat? The enormous not-even-in-the-90's sleeves? The skirt so full it has prompted two of my children to say, "You really aren't THAT fat"?  The notice from neighbors I got when I was trying it on and then went out to pick lettuce yesterday?

I think it's the fact that it's my costume. And I'm happy.

Strangely enough, LibbyK doesn't want me to make an outfit for her.  I just can't imagine why.

Picking lettuce in the costume may be just a little too much for me.  Libby doesn't want one of her own, how sad, what about Rachel?

I really think all the Sellers ladies should show up on Sunday dressed in matching clothes - you can vary the colors if you need.

I think it's cute as can be. :)

A funny medieval costume story:  Two years ago we were part of a homeschool co-op. It was huge with about 300 students or so in it. My daughter was taking 6th grade history and they came to the medieval era......after about 6 weeks of studying the time period the teacher planned to have a big costume party the last day of the semester. Well- I wrote it on the calendar and we planned and schemed are were excited about it! Then- my neice came into town and she was going with my daughter to co-op....so they dressed up in long gowns, pointy hats, puffy sleeves, hair rolled into braids Princess Lea style..and my neice kept saying- ARE YOU SURE EVERYONES GOING TO BE DRESSED UP??? ARE YOU POSTIIVE?? She was very hesitant (understandably) to enter inot a room a kids for the first time in medival costuming. LOL.

Anyhow- as it turns out- I wrote the wrong date on the calendar...and my two were the only ones dress up....Rachel (my neice) is about 2 ft taller than my girls so her medival gown came right below her knees- her super tall (dunce cap style) Princess cap make her already tall and lanky frame hilarious- and she had no other shoes to wear than her tennis shoes. LOL Oh my.....it was SOOOO funny....and to this day- my neice mentions it everytime she sees me or talks to me. :)

what a beautiful costume! i think it makes you look even more pretty. you're brave to take on a week of camp with teens. i wouldn't be looking forward to something like that at all! sometimes i'm still not sure why God granted my dreams of being a mommy. have managed to get 2 through the teen years so far, two in now, and a 6 yr old coming to the same path eventually. but those teen years can be trying days at times and i'm thankful to get to the end of a day and go to bed.

Wonderful job!!! I have a weakness for costumes and lovely dresses. I have one that I bought at a Medeval Festival several years ago and it is the same color as yours! Wonderful choice. It looks so beautiful on you!

Beautiful! I'm sure you were the most regally attired lettuce-picker anywhere that day Your girls in your cabin will have a great time with you!
You are going to bless their socks off. (Their...um....medieval footwear garments off.)
Hugs,
Renee

That looks great!  I think I may have that very pattern.  I made it in an upholstery fabric for Secunda's college Madrigal group.  The sleeves are ANNOYINGLY full. (I used a coordinating sheer drapery fabric) They look great in sheer fabric, I see you chose something like that for your sleeves too.  The Madrigal group was big on trim, so I made little trimmed cuffs to tie over them so that she could look more Madrigal-y, but then, I didn't put much ornamentation on it otherwise.

Great pics. Love that outfit on you. I'm assuming that you're already back and too late to send you a message. I'm still cleaning up my backlog of emails and subs.
