  • Heading Off a Fall

Today, I went ice skating. I did not fall and crack my head open. (although I fell twice, klutzy me)

Tomorrow, I will probably go roller skating. I hope I do not fall and hit my head.

Friday, I go skiing. Guess what I hope I do not do?

Why all the fuss about my head? Well, on 12/30, I went skiing. I am not a bad skier, and some have even told me that I’m a good skier.  We will just say that I’m an average skier.  Anyhow, something was up with me. I kept falling. At first, they were just silly things–clunk over and laugh. But, then, on the expert slope, I somehow wrecked. I still do not quite know how. And I wound up facing uphill and smashed the back of my head into the snow. Ow. Ow.

I got up, laughed, and skied down. Then, I went down a different slope and wrecked, but I did not hit my head. At that point, it was time to go in.  We all sat in the lodge for a while, and then I drove home.  When I was almost home, the middle went out of my vision. By the time I got home, I was seeing incredibly beautiful, pulsing circles of silver, blue, and white trapezoids. I put myself to bed for the night.

Now, a week later, my head still aches in the back. My neck is stiff, and I have a few weird, little things going on. So, I am a bit paranoid now.  Yes, I’m planning to buy a helmet before Friday. This little girl learned her lesson.

  • you probably had a concussion and should have gone to the doctor’s!

  • ooooh, Mary, you are either brave or stupid to be going back for more so soon.  Yikes!

After breaking a kneecap while ice skating several years ago, I haven’t been skating since.  I did go skiing a couple winters ago, but I was too paranoid to really enjoy it.  After spending 3 months with crutches/wheelchair, somehow it just didn’t seem worth the risk.  I guess I’m a wimp…

  • @homefire -

I am pretty sure I am stupid.

  • Get back on the horse girl…. classic case of do as I say as it is coming from me, the whimpiest girl on the planet!

  • I’m happy that your enjoying yourself. I’m scared that you didn’t go to the doctor. My friends dad fell on the snow on 12/21 got up, had dinner and conversation - started seeing spots and then died an hour later.

PLEASE wear your helmet. We love your blog too much. :)

  • You should get this checked out by a doctor!  This is not normal!

  • Boy do I miss skiing, it’s cold enough here for snow, just not wet enough.  As for the helment thing–GET IT–next time I ski I’ll be sure to wear one.

  • The son of one of my father’s co-workers was K.O’d in a football tackle. They let him get up and play the rest of the game, (something they do not allow now,I think from bitter experience.)  Two months later he had to have brain surgery to remove a clot on his brain, and there had been few symptoms until then.  I think you should get checked out and tell a doctor or neurologist what happened to you.  After you are cleared, I’d recommend seeing  an osteopath who does cranio-sacral therapy; who can check out your skull and see if any normal movement in the suture or the flow of cerebral spinal fluid is restricted from the fall.
