  • Manly Preposition

    By Morris Bishop...

    I lately lost a preposition:
It hid, I thought, beneath my chair.
    And angrily I cried: "Perdition!
Up from out of in under there!"

    Correctness is my vade mecum,
    And straggling phrases I abhor;
And yet I wondered: "What should he come
Up from out of in under for?"

It's also Leonardo da Vinci's birthday today.  In honor of him, I'm going to stand funny and see if anyone notices.

  • Yay for grammar...okay, I'm strange.

  • That poem is AWESOME!

  • Great post, sweetheart.  That Morris Bishop is one creative guy!

Had a brainstorm this morning about my opening lecture for later today involving the "motivation" section on algebra.  So I must edit that this morning.  Very exciting!

Hope your day is off to a good start.  Love!

P.S.  Thanks to another 500-credit widget, I can afford to give you a fabulous Mini!!!!

  • That's a great poem! It makes me want to come up from out of in under and get busy!

  • Did they notice?

I had to laugh, because I was thinking you were going to imitate the famous DaVinci picture here in your post...which would first mean being naked, and then mean finding a HUGE hoola hoop and a square one to boot. Yes, just standing funny is plenty.

    Love the poem, BTW.

  • @i_was_there_and_back_again - I thought the same thing. I wish I could teach a few people about prepositions and not ending sentences in them, especially "at."

  • The rude country bumpkin goes to Harvard....being as many a Freshman is perpetually unaware of the campus geographies, he naturally must ask a question.
"Where is the library AT?," the lost bumpkin freshman asks aloud as if to himself.
"We here at harvard do not end our sentences with prepositional phrases," Responds another alumnist with injured ears.
"Where is the library at, A&&****?"

Please keep in mind your poem was much more the entertainment and inspiration...shall i go to detention now?

  • Love the poem.

  • great little poem! i, too, love (correct) grammar. we had a jr high english teacher drill us about not ending sentences with prepositions, esp the very-overused "at" as in, "where is it at?" the more modern "myself and my mom are going to the store" etc drives me absolutely nuts.
    thanks for the smiles....

  • Hmmm, Did they notice?  I bet they would if you wore the same outfit and carried around a giant hula hoop to stand in.

Prepositions...funny.  I like Churchill's quote too: "Its the sort of nonsense up with which I will not put.

  • He is a great guy! Horray!

  • Great poem! BTW, I just left an award for you on my blog. Stop by and pick it up
    Hugs,
    Renee

  •   Love it!
