Windy Whine
Last night, we didn’t sleep so well. The wind was so strong that any moment, I expected a house to fall on me, so I got up and took off my striped socks and ruby slippers. Just about that time, the power went out. After a bit of fumbling around (thank heavens for my book light!), we found the non-electric clock and set it.
When the alarm did go off in the darkness and howling winds of 6:30 a.m., we were sure school must have been on a delay or canceled. But, how to tell? The power was still out, so no power to the direct-cable-connect computers and no router for the battery-operated laptops, so we couldn’t check the websites. And, our non-cordless phone turned out not to have been plugged in, so we would have missed the phone call alert. We decided to err on the side of caution and made the kids shower by flashlight. It turns out, there was no delay. It was just us country folk that were without power.
Little Miss and I were rather chilly, since we had no heat in the house, but we turned on the gas fireplace in the living room and cuddled up.
I really wanted tea, but with no stove and microwave, what to do? Pull out the camp stove!
Little Miss and I decided to spend the day reading. I think I read aloud for four or more hours from Igraine the Brave (excellent book). We didn’t quite finish it, as we had to take breaks to eat, drink hot tea, and pick up the shingles from the yard that kept blowing down. I think we picked up at least 15 of them.
The power came back on at 11:30, so we could turn on the lights again, but we found we didn’t want to. It was quite cozy in the gray darkness with the wind while we were cozy wrapped in Grammy Norris-crocheted afghans. The wind is still howling, and the sky is spitting snow. Gockle has come down with a fever and feels wretched. I am thinking tomorrow will be another cozy day.

Well, that just does sound lovely…and not too much of a hardship.
I agree–maybe a break occasionally is a good thing! But I do hopw Gockle is feeling better soon!
Aww, it sounds lovely even tho it was power went off in the mist of it. But you made it best out of a somewhat bad situation.. COZY, hmm I miss that.. Sounds yall are doing good lately.
So, your weather is crazy, too! 2 weeks ago we were without electricity due to the ice storm and this week we are having spring-like storms. Tornadoes; in February! We aren’t picking up shingles…….we are picking up tree parts!
the wind was crazy! i was glad for the times i didn’t have to be outside in it (and hurried through the times i did!). glad you could cuddle up and be cozy with some good books
I like how real life can have an element of adventure like that!
We had major winds on Tues night. Our roofing was blown all over and we had to have someone come fix it. I was amazed that our contractor found instant help in a town where help is usually apathetic.
The campstove was a great idea! Glad that you had a cozy day.
The campstove on your smooth-top reminds me of when we lived in PA, & the electric went out! Now we have a gas stove, so I can at least cook if we lose power. It’s been windy up here, too. I’ve been too busy to try to be cozy.
Maybe Sunday afternoon……
I would love it if I had Libby down here to babysit. I’m sure James could get a fine job at UVA or Mary Washington, and I would have a wonderful sitter! I really miss you guys! We’ve been wanting to drive up to State College for ages, and I’m hoping that we can plan a trip in April. I can’t believe you lost that many shingles off the roof. So who’s going up to replace them?
Sounds about like my time here.. It was 30 when I got here, then 50, and after two days of mud, we had horrible hurricane force winds for 2 days. It was awful!
So how was your Valentine’s Day? Any good deals at Best Buy?
Love!
thank you for the nice comment u left on my page.
