Many Hoorahs
I once asked myself, “What would you never have wanted to homeschool without?” One of those things I thought of was Skip Count Kid’s Bible Songs. It taught all my kids skip counting and made multiplication so much easier. And, guess who has been trying to teach multiplication without her beloved songs? Yup, me. Little Miss and I made up our own songs, like the nine’s table to Happy Birthday, but it wasn’t the same. Finally, I said, “This is silly!” and went to Amazon today and downloaded the CD. 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40 days Goliath had to wait. (But I didn’t have to wait at all. Huzzah for the MP3 download!)
TGD has been hard at work on the next step for The Teaching Company’s Algebra series. He submitted it today, so he and I are planning a date out tonight to celebrate. And then we’ll watch some more episodes of Chuck online. Three cheers for NBC for letting the hoi polloi watch shows for free.
But now, I have to fetch LibbyK and take her to flute lessons. I might just have to make a trip to Barnes and Noble for the newest Lauren Willig novel, which I hadn’t realized was out yet. Hoo-ray for Christmas gift cards!
What’s making you huzzah lately?

I get a kick out of that Chuch show, too. Had no idea you could watch it online.
Hmmm…huzzah lately? Maybe the formerly-worst-dog-I’ve-ever-dogsat turning into a better, sweeter 90 lb creature. Or maybe the internet being down at work all morning, which left me nothing to do but research agents in Writers Market 2009. And definitely huzzahing my wonderful husband who is taking me on an adventure this 3-day weekend.
I wish you many more Huzzah’s today!
Learning songs are great! I taught my niece the months of the year within a day. She might be only able to name them while singing but who cares!
I used the very same skip count songs to learn my multiplication tables, and used them when I was tutoring, too! 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 good friends. 18,21, 24, 27…
So those skip count songs are really great, huh? I have tried SO many things that haven’t worked well, maybe I’ll have to give it a look. I’m really glad to have the rec–Thanks!
TGD is writing for The Teaching Company? Cool beans – counting ones, of course.
I have a B&N gift card for Christmas just awaiting. I haven’t even moseyed into the store yet. How ridiculous is that?!
That’s great….is it replacing what they already have?
So, will he be in the video?
Even though I *did* do without it for the first few years of homeschooling, I have felt that a copying machine was one of my biggest “must haves” for homeschooling. You talk about the Teaching Company like we’ve heard this information before. I don’t remember reading it. I love other Teaching Company courses, but haven’t used their algebra course since I felt that I could handle that myself. Some of the high school courses are too basic and so I can see that fleshing out a high school course would be a great thing for the company that does such a great job otherwise. I particularly like their history videos (except for one set done, ironically enough, by a Penn State professor), and especially those done by Allen Guelzo and Philip Daileader and Patrick Allitt.

He is the only one in the video! It’s 36 lectures of TGD teaching Algebra to two cameras.
I thought I had mentioned this before, but with two people asking questions, I’ll have to assume I didn’t say much and will report thoroughly in a later entry.
I don’t remember the Teaching Company info either. It even was big enough news to make me come and actually comment. Although I love reading your posts, I am too lazy to sign in. This is wonderful news. So many people I know are having trouble with Algebra and even though I’m with Hobbits8 and think I can handle it myself, I have one math challenged child who may make me eat those words. I’m so happy that I’ll just be able to buy the TGD’s DVD’s when they are available.
Hmmm. I don’t know what CHUCK is. I’ll have to look that up.
Today’s Huzzah is because Sarah isn’t puking her guts out like she was yesterday! (BIG HUZZAH!), Today is Sarah’s birthday…..(another reason I wanted the pukies to go away)…It’s halfway through the week- which means it’s halfway to the weekend!
WOW, I didn’t KNOW they had a multiplication one too; we absolutely loved the skip count one, just for the tunes alone. And wow, it’s pretty cool that your husband is part of the Teaching Company. By the way, I contradance every month with someone who was at your New Year’s Eve party…

Anna?
I think her name is Hannah. She is in the last photo of your New Year’s post; she’s a psychology student of my husband.
Oh, thank you thank you thank YOU for the hot tip! I need a song for every math fact. Perhaps I will even learn my sevens and eights in the six and higher category…..
Congratulations to TGD. Have a great night out.
I’ll have to check into that skip counting cd– all of my girls have trouble with their multiplication facts. They just don’t really want to take the time to memorize them.
If all goes well, I will get to see some old friends I haven’t seen in months! Huzzah!
