  • It’s Tempting

As much as I enjoyed your replies, it wasn’t really a vote. You can do that on November 4th.  I know it wasn’t the stomach flu. And, I just don’t think it’s #3 either.  It was just one of those flukes. (But, I’ll let you know if something else…comes up.)

I’ve been busy all evening working on a game for tomorrow night’s Youth Group. It’s taken me a bit of work, but I hope it will be worth it.  The game is called Spiritual Warfare. The kids are divided up into teams of six or so and are given a Bible, a flashlight, and a mystery clue (several Bible verses) to find the location of their next clue. Also, they will find cryptic clues at each location for a Bible verse. To win the game, they must correctly identify the Bible verse and reference in the shortest amount of time.

But, it’s not as easy as it sounds. While they are dashing about in the dark searching for clues, there are people hidden all around, and those people are Tempters. When a group is stopped by a Tempter, they are presented with a temptation in the form of a situation or story. They have to refute the temptation using scripture or Christian reasoning based on scripture.  If they cannot refute the temptation, they are given a burden by the Tempter.

In the original game I played at camp this summer, the burdens were backpacks full of rocks, having a team member blindfolded, etc.  However, we just played a game a few weeks ago with consequences similar to those, so I changed things.  The team just gets a paper plate hung around the neck and five minutes added to their final time.

I get to be a Tempter. Mwah ha ha.

What topic do you think I should use to tempt the teens?  We already have purity, gossip, not professing Christ, loving the world, worry, and self-righteousness/pride.

  • That sounds VERY cool!    I’m struggling to think of another temptation.  Maybe power?

  • What a great idea! Other temptations: laziness, judgmentalism, prejudice, self-pity, envy, jealousy, materialism….gee, this list could go on forever!

  • what a fun game!

Thanks for posting some comments on my Xanga. I am going to get back to you, but I haven’t had time this week. Let us know how the game goes!

  • Sounds like such a fun game. Especially at night with flashlights…..FUN!!! I’m trying to think of temptations…so I thought I’d stick to the ones I myself have struggled with….And at the top of that list would be (drum roll) Spending ing too much time on Xanga!    (DING-DING!)

It’s 11:15 and I must get to bed.

  • Darn!  I was hoping for #3 (I guess I mena #6)!

Love the sound of that game!  Temptations?

    Depression

    Vainity

    Not respecting parents

    Inappropriate language

    Despair

    Holding grudges

Over induldgence in anything (food, shopping, x-box)

    Making an idol of anything

Not spending enough time with the Lord

Being Quarrelsome with siblings, friends etc.

    Laziness

    Not trusting God with everything

    Discontent

    Coveting

    Procrastination

    Immodesty

And that just describes my morning.

  • That sounds like an excellent game!  I am going to copy and paste these instruction in an email to our youth director.  He might have heard of it before, but sure haven’t!

  • Well, glad you don’t have the flu. And let us know if it does turn out to be #3. You’ve got some great suggestions here. Sounds like a fun game!

  • what a great game!  and everyone’s come up with so many temptations already.  the only other thing I can think of is “come on, everyone’s doing it” and “it’ can be a plethora of things.

it’s been a while since i’ve been on xanga, but i’ve been keeping up with your blog…you’re always such a joy!

  • These have already been mentioned in so many words, but I think laziness and peer pressure would be my top two for teens….can I come? :)

  • This sounds likd a fantastic game for a youth group!  I love the list ElizabethDNB gave you and was trying to think of something I could add that she didn’t cover…One that I am a little too familiar with is unforgiveness/bitterness.  What a burden. Have fun with that game.

Well, disappointing as it seems to a few of us, I’m glad you’re feeling better.

  • The game sounds complicated to plan, but EXCELLENT! I know these fall underworldly stuff, but how about this temptation: something that would loose cool points with peers if they didn’t do it. Or similarly, to gain a major social coup but to have to ignore or be disloyal to a close friend…sort of being tempted to back stab someone they love to gain social clout.

  • Oooh, that sounds quite fun! I want to play!! I used to love games like that. No, you can cross out the “used to”, it’s just that I haven’t had the chance to play one in so long. As soon as I get my Star Trek transporter up and working, I’ll be there!

  • Wow, this sounds like a fantastic game! I hope you publish it for us soon…
