  • Sneezy Saturday

Several of you have asked how the children are adjusting to public school. Perhaps too well?  They seem to be doing fine in all their classes, except the homeschool leftover classes, which are mostly an afterthought.  Hunter has a straight A+ across the board, and the other kids have good scores too.  What has been the biggest “Um…” for me is the level of “So and So is going out with So and So” that is rampant in the middle school. Yes, I’d expect it among the high schoolers, but the sixth graders? And that is the ONLY topic of conversation?  Yikes. Lord, may my children see the folly of their peers and with “going out” before an appropriate age.

My allergies have been wretched of late. How are yours? Or are you one of those amazing people so blessed as not to have a box of Puffs Plus strapped to your hip at all times?  I just hope it isn’t the critters. Then I’ll be miserable year-round.

Today, it is rainy and slow-feeling. TGD and the children cleaned the house totally this morning. It’s such a delight. I try to keep up with things throughout the week, but it is a blessing to have a full tidy on Saturday. You should SEE the mountain of laundry I have, though. It’s laughable for only four days since I did all the laundry.

The guys are all collapsed on various soft furniture watching football. The girls are watching a DVD in their room (laptop–no TV in there!) and keeping the kitten out of the way of Max the cat, who decided he might like to be part of our family again and is snoozing on the rocking chair.  I took Gockle out this morning to find leaves for a school project (which has been hanging over MY head more than over his. Must. Get. It. Done. Arrrgh!)  I am hoping to drag Wit away from the leisure of the day to take him shopping as he has a number of things he needs, and I don’t have that much free time to take him shopping.

Is your Saturday shaping up to be a blessing, too? I certainly hope so!

  • We’ll pray for your public school kids too…glad to hear that things are going well, though, apart from the “going out” conversation!

Enjoy the rest of your slow paced Saturday!  Those are always nice.

  • When my Dr. had me tested for allergies, he swore I was allergic to my my 8 cats and 2 dogs. He was in total shock when the tests came back negative. HA!

    God bless you Mary.

  • Glad you’re having a good Saturday (despite the allergies). Yes, I am one of those annoying people who isn’t allergic to anything, but my husband is battling some sinus sickness right now so I can sort of relate. It’s been a good Saturday thus far, and will be even better if my Illini can beat your Nittany Lions tonight! (Don’t know if you care about PSU football, but I’m pretty sure your boys do.) Sorry, couldn’t resist!

  • Yes, isn’t it that whole social dynamic which drives us nuts – they need the friends, the friends are a problem. Hope yours all continue to adjust well!

I can relate to your allergies…and I hope with you it is not the animals! That would be no fun at all.

  • For years I had to get allergy shots, but now I don’t really have any problems. Except now that I said it, I’m sure something will happen . . .

  • Great that your kids are so successful at school!

  • I have terrible allergies but usually only in the spring and maybe a couple of weeks in the fall.  Have a great weekend!

  • It’s raining buckets here tonight…has rained like this all day and last evening too.  But how blessed it is.  We sooooo need it.  Although I do admit that WalMarting and Costcoing in buckets-of-rain is not really my preferred shopping status.  But made the best of it and had a good time any-o-how.  The trip was very productive.  And I didn’t have to stop at the mall:  yay!  I like going to the mall as much as you like the going-out-with-so-and-so concept…which, by the way:  I am with ya!  That stuff is awful.  I will keep you and yours in prayer.  May the Lord strengthen and give you grace, wisdom, and discretion to guide your schoolers.  And a dry nose and breath of fresh air too.  My allergies have almost ceased since I stopped eating wheat.  Never knew I had a wheat allergy!  Was suspecting the dairy one, but not the wheat.  Shezamm!  Anyway…blessings and hot tea with honey.  You’re certainly not allergic to that!

PS:  Clarification:  I am not saying you’re allergies are caused by wheat or dairy.  I don’t want any readers or you thinking I am indicating such a thing…I am merely sharing a tidbit of info with ya.  Gosh, there are SO many allergens out there.  We’re all so different.  Fortunately I don’t have tons of allergies, but the ones I have, well, they make up for the ones I don’t.  Enough said….Cookie is longwinded tonight.  Sorry!

  • That’s the big focus with the middle school kids around here too- boys. I don’t know how the kids can think about school when all they seem to think about is going out with the cute boys or girls. It sounds like your kids have adapted pretty good though, going by the great grades. I hope your allergies get better. My family and I all suffers from allergies. It is really annoying. My husband is allergic to everything I think.

  • my Saturday included cleaning a small corner of my basement and there was much accomplishment in that!

Even though I still homeschool, I still see this sort of thing within a small sector of the youth group.  I agree with you whole-heartedly, middle school is so young to be entertaining the ‘going out’ notion.  Their maturity level just isn’t up for it no matter how grown up they think they are.  Last week youth group had 2 middle schoolers dropped off for the Wed. night service and they chose to spend it hiding under a school bus spending the evening together.  The youth pastor over-seeer and the female adult youth group leader noticed the pair missing at the start of the serviceand spent over 40 minutes driving around looking for them, or searching the church.  They were found and tried to run.  They stopped when their given names were called and gave up in defeat.  How mature is this age?  They would have been considered mature if they had been where they were suppose to be encouraging each other to grow in the Lord-yikes!  If that bus had slipped out of gear many hearts would have been broken.

The teen years are such a short blip on the time line of life to get involved romantically at such a young age.

  • Well, it is a two-edge sword, isn’t it?  I am glad your children like school, but they will learn things you aren’t sending them there to learn.  I am in alternative school so my statistics are skewed but……….I have had 2 female students that were pregnant in the 8th grade.   Yes, I pray for these kids every day.

  • Hello! I’ve been suffering with allergies. I love fall but hate the sniffing and congestion that always seems to come with it. I guess I will just suffer through it because I love having the windows open and the cool breezes float in :)

  • Oh dear, I hope it isn’t pet dander that is causing your troubles.  Quartus is allergic to cats and dogs, but we have kept part of the house where his bedroom is (and also the family room) cat-free.  He seems to do alright if he doesn’t touch him, and sometimes he does that… Prima’s husband, Printerguy won’t leave them alone, but he also suffers the consequences.

I do feel for you; before I had allergy shots, autumn was my worst time.  I ran a constant fever and my head would pound if I bent over.

  • RYC: The class is face to face, hence, no doubt, the paucity of students. In future years I might well teach one online, however.

  • Sorry about your wretched allergies! I don’t get them badly…I have mild discomfort or annoyance on days that others are in utter misery. Ijust take it as the opportunity to be sympathetic because what I feel is a heads-up that allergy-havers are hurtin’. So….s-y-m-p-a-t-h-y your way

Don’t be shocked, but you’ll find sexually active 6th graders these days. (I’m still somewhat shocked by that myself.) Just know that you’ve raised your kids with a certain set of standards and beliefs, and if knowledge of such activities crosses your kids’ paths, they’ll be shocked and grieved and feel the person is really messed up. They won’t jump in and want to participate! (I actually cried for the person when I heard of it going on when I was in HIGH SCHOOL)

I’m sure some of the “going with” craze could rub off on your kids, but that will depend on their interests and where they are developmentally in the social arena. You know your kids…you might be able to guess whether they’ll be observers, totally disinterested, or want to “go with” themselves. Just trust your instincts if the latter crosses your path because God has his Holy Spirit in there with you and your gut will likely be his prompting.

Thanks for your kind and encouraging words!
