The Great Race
Every year for the past however-many, the Lion’s Club has held a 10K run/5K walk race on the Saturday of Curwensville Days. And every year while we sat on the porch chowing down on the Rotary Club’s chicken barbecue dinner, we say, “We should do that.” Well, this year, we did.
Extensive training went into the preparation for this race. First, we made sure to eat a good breakfast.
And then we stretched.
PapaJohn was all set to join us with his cane and broken foot, but he had to go flip chickens at the barbecue.
Of all of us, LibbyK was the most excited to be there.
Or maybe the most excited one was Gockle.
(We just couldn’t get Grammy Peep to stop stretching!)We boarded the busses to take us to the start of the race. Gockle was running, so he got in one and the three women got in the other.
Homeschool boy panics on a yellow school bus.
The race went well for the women. LibbyK came in first in the under-14 walking category. Gockle stepped in a pothole about 1.5 miles into the race and wrenched his leg. He walked the remaining 4 miles and finished the race, earning second place in his age division.
Libby was really excited to win first place.
And, Yours Truly got third place in walking in her age division. I am old woman, hear me roar!
But, I got beat out by a bunch of 50 year olds when you looked at the time sheets. And LibbyK beat me, too. Oh, well. We’ll pretend you didn’t know that.
Since the 50 year old competition was so stiff, Grammy Peep didn’t get a trophy. She fixed that by making her own.
A used cigarette found on the ground placed on a stick–quite a wonderful trophy for a race non-winner.
There were door prizes, and our lucky Libby won an oscillating sprinkler!
After a healthy post-race snack of no-bake cookies, muffins, and chocolate chip cookies, it was time to go back home.
Hooray for the Curwensville Lion’s Club Race!

Hey she’s actually smiling in that last picture! And Gockle shouldn’t be afraid of school buses. I should know, I rode them for twelve years… and looking back on those twelve years… on second thought, maybe he should be afraid. But those are horror stories for another occasion.
My favorite was that very healthy breakfast of yours.

Actually, we staged the pictures of Libby with her purse. Although she can look like that anytime she wants, we asked her to pose with her purse, iPod, and scowl. Being a good sport, she did!
I figured as much, but I still thought it was funny. (I mean, scowling with a trophy? Who would do that?)
Fun! I enjoyed spending it with you through pictures.
LOL.
God bless you Mary!
Very sporty of you all!
So you homeschool your children? How does that look like?
What a hoot of a post. I’ve missed you!
Yay races! It looks like you all had fun… at least with the camera!
Hilarious!
I detect the beginnings of a dynasty of marathon racers.
What was the poem you found?
No-bake cookies. Now you’re just making me hungry. I wonder if I have pb, cocoa, and oatmeal. <Trapdoorspider wanders off to rummage through her kitchen cupboards….>
What fun!! Thanks for sharing all of your fun pictures.
Hahhahahhaaa……..good story, excellent! I love the picture of home-boy on the bus. hahahaha
And congratulations on finishing and finishing so good!
I’ve been trying all day to “smile even though I don’t feel like it”, and your post nearly had me in stitches! I love the photos of the scowling children!
And you all did so well on that nourishing breakfast….where are the doughnuts? I think I need one.
we have a race this coming weekend -bike and it’s called goatneck-hey, I need to blog on it.
Um, you were in a category with 50 yr old women, that must have been a large spread, you’re too young to compete with them.
Gockle looked like he had a great time, but Lib on the other hand looks like a teenager forced to hang out with her whimsical mom and grandma…I bet she still had fun.
Where were the other kiddos?
what a fun photo story!
What a fun day! And to actually follow through on what you have been saying for years would be a good idea. Now, you’ll probably do it every year. Sorry about Gockle’s leg. I hope it’s feeling better today and not worse.
Oh, you make running sound like so much fun! Congrats on your trophies!
Heeheee. You are a bright spot in my day as always!
Did I mention I have been finding text books that I want on PBS?! Woo hoo! I tried to look at your list (cuz I’m nosy!) but you were on vacation and had put a hold. I’ll spy it out this week!
How is everything else?
Woo Hoo!!! Great pictures…looks like an absolute BLAST!!! I was in your neck of the woods last weekend. I went along with a friend who ran his daughter to Penn State for a weekend with friends. It was horrible driving in town because of the artfest…we ate at the Gman and enjoyed the chalk art on the street next to the restaurant. I love it there. Be Blessed!!! Susan
what a great post….I am sitting here giggling to myself….good thing its only the cat looking at me…!
nice post!
Good job! Looks like a lot of fun… or at least you all chose to make it fun.
Is that your mom?? Oh, my gosh! She’s a doll! She IS the star of the show, you know! I hope I look that good & act that silly when I’m the mother of a thirty-something year old daughter!! (Gee, I better get busy NOW!!!) I’ve already got the silly part down…. it’s the “look that good” part I need to get going on! But, I did get a little bike ride in today, plus, B. & I have been better at getting a walk or bike ride in most days now. You all look like you had a blast!…. o.k., well, MOST of you looked like you had a blast! Gotta work on those kids!! ;D
Guess what! We have chickens! Yup! I have a friend who has a friend who did the whole egg-hatching thing with her children and they were allowed to keep the chicks, so, since she really doesn’t have room, she let me have 5 of them! There are a 3 more plus a turkey that they are keeping to watch grow up a little more, but, when they’re done with them, she said I could have them, too! Ain’t that sweet!!
What else…. let’s see. Oh, tomorrow I get my haircut & go to lunch with a friend, and, on Tuesday, we leave for a camping trip with our church family. We’ll be going a little early with another family and on Thursday the rest of the gang gets there.
I am going to try my hand at making some T-Shirt dresses for me & my girls, so, I better get going on that before the day is gone!
Thanks for keeping in touch! Talk to ya later!
wow comgrats!!! i like ur post; it’s very funny!
I laughed all the way through reading this post, how much fun you all seem to have. I love those pics of your daughter, umm, I have a few of those of my 16 year old…
My 20 year old ran her first 5K this summer, then she did a triathalon. She felt really good about completing that… Next month she is in a 10K. I think this might be addicting, but you certainly make it look fun!
You are hilarious! Thanks for the giggles this morning!
Enjoyed a good laugh with that post! Way to go Libby! You’ve got that unenthused teenager look down.
Enjoying this Monday that I don’t have to do school. I did some weeding in my flower bed. VBS starts tonight. Kids can’t wait.
zowee 76 years is a looong time!!
It looked like you were having a lot of fun. Maybe I should try it some it year. I enjoy all the pictures you post on your blog.
haha wow, i love Libby’s enthusiasim. Why didn’t the guys run too? I thought Nathan loved running.
Ummmm that barbecued chicken sounds divine. Maybe I shall fire up the Weber indeed…since my oven is broken! Horrors!
Blessings And A Fun Rest Of Your July,
Cookie
That was so exciting. It captured the invigorating spirit of competition so well it makes me want to compete too. I’m not going to worry about a trophy, I’m going for the sprinkler!
the pic of granny peep eating donuts is my favorite!!
