The Organizing of Books Is a Difficult Matter
It isn’t just one of your holiday games… (Kudos to anyone who can identify the allusion!)
Yes, I’ve decided to tackle the bookshelves. We stuffed books willy-nilly when we got back from England, and today was the day to start taming the beast. I also decided it was time to start pulling things to sell on Ebay–once I get around to selling on Ebay. I’ve got about eight Xerox boxes full of books to list, and I’m not done sorting yet. But, fret not. I still have 11 full bookshelves to keep me amused and reading.
Do any of you veteran Ebay sellers have any tips for a newbie?
Whut I Done Did Et on Tewzdeh
Breakfast–hot tea and a homemade (well, from a box mix) chocolate chip muffin
Lunch–Green Bowl restaurant with MaineLady. I had two smallish bowls of stir-fry with chicken and rice and lots of veggies. Of course, the M-n-M Blizzard afterward wasn’t a great idea, but it was super yummy.
Supper–Strawberry shortcake (just-picked strawberries, touch of honey, a Jiffy Mix biscuit) We live practically next-door to a strawberry farm.
Snacks–I actually didn’t have any today–yet. Mwah-ha-ha!
Exercise–2 mile walk with hand weights, 10 minutes of strawberry picking

THENaming of Cats
T.S. Eliot
The naming of cats is a difficult matter,
It isn’t just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I’m mad as a hatter
When I tell you a cat must have three
different names.
First of all, there’s the name
that the family use daily,
Such as Victor, or Jonathan,
George or Bill Bailey–
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names
if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen,
some for the dames;
Such as Plato, Admetus,
Electra, Demeter–
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you,
a cat needs a name that’s particular,
A name that is peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he
keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers,
or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind,
I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quazo or Coripat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellyrum–
Names that never belong
to more than one cat.
But above and beyond
there’s still one name left over,
And that is the name that you will never guess;
The name
that no human research can discover–
But The Cat Himself Knows,
and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought,
of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

I had no idea that would come out so wierd! I cut and pasted off the internet (duh!) when I realized where the line was from, but should have just typed it in myself and made it look right. Of course half of the words would have then been wrong, but…
@ElizabethDNB -
You win! I’ll have to send you a book as a prize.
@ElizabethDNB - Way to go! I didn’t know that poem, but enjoy his writing.
Advise for ebay???? TAKE THE BOOKS TO GOODWILL!!!! (LOL!!!!) It’s SUCH a hassle. I suggest not listing the books separately- and doing them in “lots”…meaning a whole heap of novels together- maybe a series of books as one auction…..it’s a lot of work- and sometimes you only make $2.50 by the time it’s all said and done!! Been there done that…..I drop spare books off at our local homeschool consignment store now. I dont make as much- but I dont spend as money time on it either.
mmm. green bowl . . . i might be heading into town next week. want to try and meet up?
I’d list on Amazon.com. Type in the book you want to sell, then click on “sell a copy”.
That’s my suggestion!
oooh, strawberries! I haven’t had any yet. In fact, I don’t know where a strawberry farm is around here. This is a serious gap in my knowledge base, and I have lived here for four years!
I NEED STRAWBERRIES!!!!
Wanna come sort my books after you’re done there? Mine are a mess.
I agree with SpazzyMommy comment and try to sell them on Ebay in lots, particularly if you have series books. I also know Amazon is a good place to sell as suggested by Patenaude. What genre books do you have I might be interested. Please write me!
I’d rather sell the books on amazon. There you can place them for a higher price and for free. The fee for selling isn’t small but it works better than ebay for me.
I love what you eat~how is it going? Are you losing weight?
Drizzly here today, but just got our tesco voucher coupons, so are off to Legoland tomorrow to surprise the children!
We will miss you.
I asked Claire what she will miss the most in England, “R” she said.
Andrew told me he missed “R” in the car today~maybe we will try and call you~
I miss you!
Lisa
p.s. 16 more days~

Old Possum’s Book – woohoo! Do I get a cookie?
shucks, I knew I wouldn’t be the first to guess “The Naming of Cats”, but the whole poem (well, most of it) ran through my head the minute I read your title
Eliot is one of my hubby’s favorite poets, so we’re so familiar with that poem…and of course the broadway musical is my absolute favorite!
have to throw in my two cents about ebay…I agree with all of the above…amazon is a lot less hassle! and a smaller risk! (if you don’t sell your stuff on ebay when the auction’s over, you lose money and still have your stuff!) But if you choose to go ebay, definitely sell in lots – you’ll save in postage for sure. We just got rid of two full bookshelves of books…we had a garage sale – mainly books, though we threw in a few other items, too. We priced everything at $.50 – $5.00 We made a lot of money, got rid of a lot of books, and the leftovers we sent to a local prison ministry. whatever you do, I’m sure it’ll be profitable to all…happy bookselling!
I give books to the library, thrift store and the senoir citizens and anyone else I can think of .
Agreed with the other posts about selling your books. Unless you are selling electronics or something else that will recover your listing fees, ebay is not worth it. But I have had good success in selling stuff on ebay, as I have been able to sell a film camera and even broken electronics!
I mostly give my books to a used bookstore in Tahlequah. He always writes up a credit for me but I have never used it. I have never done the ebay thing but my step-son does it all the time and loves it.
Are you losing weight? How can that be with chocolate chip muffins, blizzards and cake?
I would totally do PBS instead of selling. You have them around for longer, but it is so much more fun and the rewards are so great. leebenvic signed me up a few years ago and I my life has never been the same. I keep my books for them in a tupperware container in the garage, so it is not like they are gone, but over the last year or three the number has dwindled from like 15 to 5 and I know people who get rid of many more. I just ordered a hardback writing textbook from them and am so thrilled! Saved $25!! So for sure, list at least soem of them there (and use my name and email as a reference so I’ll get credit wink, wink!)
@ElizabethDNB -
PBS, as in the TV station? They sell books?
@TeacherPerson - Paper Back Swap baby! It is the coolest thing ever. You list books you are willing to part with and then you can pick boks from other people. For every book of yours that soemone else reqests you get another credit to pick a book. so like I sent soemone a paperback Miss seeton and paid under $2 for postage (media rate) and then turned around and requested from someone else’s pile a great source/write source text book that I have been wanting and need for next year. I have saved hundreds of dollars using this site. I have also gotten rid of about a dozen books that I didn’t have space for and have enrolled people as gifts. You must check it out! I’ll email you a link.
i guess the profile pic is new (??) we took it last summer, but i posted it a few months ago. Time flies when you live in England
Please eat a bowl of strawberries for me! They are one of the fruits I miss so much living in the Caribbean!!
You could release your books into the wild. http://www.bookcrossing.com
