Bits of Fun
If you like to play online flash games (type of file, not flashers), Wit has a great site he updates often: http://www.thesellers.org/David/Games. I know he’d love to have more people check it out.
I found this list on jaelbee2′s site, and I thought it was hilarious. If you weren’t a girl in the 1970′s, you won’t find it nearly so amusing. (I made the comments in brackets.)
If You Were a Little Girl in the 70′s……
You had that Fisher Price Doctor’s Kit with a stethoscope that actually worked.
You owned a bicycle with a banana seat and a plastic basket with flowers on it. [Mine was purple.]
You learned to skate with actual skates (not roller blades) that had metal wheels.
You had either a bowl cut or pixie, not to mention the “Dorothy Hamill.” People sometimes thought you were a boy.
You had rubber boots for rainy days and Moon boots for snowy days.
You owned a Slip-n-Slide, on which you injured yourself on a sprinkler head more than once. [I was always jealous of the Slip-n-Slide owners.]
Your Holly Hobbie sleeping bag was your most prized possession. [I had the Holly Hobbie dollhouse and a HH birthday cake one year]
You wore a poncho, gauchos, and knickers. [My knickers were brown corduroy with a matching blazer and vest which I wore with an off-white ruffled shirt. Oh, yeah.]
You begged Santa for the electronic game, Simon. [And I got it! I also got Merlin, which I loved.]
You had the Donnie and Marie dolls with those pink and purple satiny shredded outfits, or The Sunshine family [Remember them? They had flat feet. How about Malibu Barbie in the red-orange swimsuit?]
You spent hours in your backyard on your metal swing set with the trapeze. The swing set tipped over at least once.
You had homemade ribbon barrettes in every imaginable color.
You wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder really badly. You wore that Little House on the Prairie-inspired plaid, ruffle shirt with the high neck in at least one school picture, and you despised Nellie Oleson!
Your hairstyle was described as having wings or feathers and you kept it pretty with the comb you kept in your back pocket. When you walked, the wings flapped up and down, looked like you were gonna ‘take off’. [Especially if you used hot rollers like I did. Oh, for a curling iron...]
You know who Strawberry Shortcake is, as well as her friends, Blueberry Muffin and Huckleberry Pie. [I'd pretend that Lemon Meringue married Huckleberry Pie and called her Lemon Meringue Pie. I can still remember how those dolls smell...]
You carried a Muppets lunch box to school and it was metal, not plastic with the thermos inside. Some were glass inside and broke the first time you dropped them.
You and your girlfriends would fight over which of the Dukes of Hazzard was your boyfriend. [I always went for Luke, the brunette.]
YOU had Star Wars action figures, too! [Well, I'd play with my brother's.]
It was a big event in your household each year when The Wizard of Oz would come on TV. Your mom would break out the popcorn and sleeping bags! [For us it was the Charlie Brown specials]
You tried to do lots of arts and crafts, like yarn and Popsicle-stick decoupage,or those weird potholders made on a plastic loom. [My mom still has some of those potholders.]
You made Shrinky-Dinks and put iron-on kittens on your t-shirts! [I also made fake stained glass with plastic pellets.]
You used to tape record songs off the radio by holding your portable tape player up to the speaker. [You may be wrong, but you may be ri-iight!]
You learned everything you needed to know about girl issues from Judy Blume books like Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. [We must, we must. Increase our bust.]
You thought Olivia Newton John’s song Physical was about aerobics. [Aw, she looked so wholesome! My childhood is shattered. Just like the guy who discovered his angel is a centerfold.]
You wore friendship pins on your tennis shoes, or shoelaces with heart or rainbow designs [I LOVED my velour rainbow shirt!]
You drowned yourself in Love’s Baby Soft – which was the first “real” perfume you ever owned. [My geometry teacher was allergic to it, so we'd spray ourselves copiously before we went into class.]
You glopped your lips in Strawberry Roll-on lip-gloss till it almost dripped off.
What would you add to the list?

Now that is sad! I remember most of those things but I was too old for alot of them!
I was being born in the 70s, end of the 70s actually. Now if the list talked about being a girl in the 80s…
I can relate to a lot of these items! We were in Europe from ’74-’78 but I crammed much of these into the last 2yrs of the Seventies. We spent those years in CA, and it was a tad different there than the East Coast or Midwest. We wore “ditto” jeans…the seam started in the back on one leg and continued up the leg, across your bottom and down the other leg like an upside-down U. I’d add it to the list, but only a few would recognize them.
I would add anything rainbow..shoelaces, belts
I was a 60′s kid, but I totally remember almost everyone of those. I sent this list to my younger sisters!! they will love it
Too funny!! I was born in the mid 70s, but remember most of what you’ve listed…I think the things that I think are missing (like jellies and leg warmers) might have come out of the 80s!
Oh my goodness!! I was born in 1971 .. I remember just about EVERYTHING you posted!! My friend was the one with the doctor kit and I was so jealous. I had a blue bike with a yellow banana seat. I had the metal wheeled skates!! I loved those!! I remember getting my hair cut in the first grade. It was so short I wouldn’t come out of the back yard for a month.. thankfully it was summer. Moon boots rule! At one time we had a Slip-N-Slide. It didn’t last long. Not a big Holly Hobby fan but had a friend that had her whole room in Holly Hobby stuff. I was a gaucho gal! And I had forgotten about Simon and Merlin. I never did receive those. I had the Sunshine family and the Malibu Barbie. We loved our swingset. I know I knocked the wind out of myself many many times from falling off that trapeze! =) We love Laura and hated Nellie!!! I had feathered hair!! And I made clothes for my strawberry shortcake dolls. Wow, that really brought back memories! I had a Little House on the Prairie metal lunch box. Watching Dukes of Hazard was a big deal but we didn’t really think about who was cute. I must have been a bit younger than you.. =) My mom still has some of the tapes we made. I love Judy Blume. Have you read her book Summer Sisters? Love it! We made the friendship pins for our shoes all the time!!
I love this post.. It really brought back some good memories!!
I was in Jr.High and highschool during the 70′s ( graduated 1975) and I remember lots of these things…I used to babysit my little cousins who LOVED Strawberry Shortcake, The Dukes of Hazzard, etc. I had feathered hair.
haha…yes, you know me…(not that we were best buds, but come on!). my parents are steve and carolyn and my sister is sarah…is it all coming back now?
This is a great list…but I grew up in the 80s, so I’m not sure. It makes me think of orange and brown carpet when I think of 70s, though.
@Jaelbee2 -
It came back as soon as I went through some back posts and saw a picture! The first few entries didn’t give me enough clues. Your little girl got so big. She was just a wee baby when we left.
That really is a great list and I remember many of those things. Wow, I had not thought of Shrinky Dinks in a long time. Those things were so cool! And I will note that many of the comments above refer to Bo and Luke Duke, but let’s not forget that there were *many* interesting characters on the Dukes of Hazzard including Uncle Jesse, Roscoe P. Coltrane, Cooter, Cletus, and lest I forget, Daisy.
Hope you have a great day!
@TheGoodDoctorJ -
I always had a secret crush on Enos.
Whoa…I was born in 75, and I am embarrassed by how many that I recognized or had! I remember playing on my trapeze swing set with the good smelling Strawberry Shortcake toy!
I would add the Fisher Price Tape Recorder, and I always sang ”I just called to say I love you” into the mic.
I loved this list!!!! And I remember everything on it!!! Thanks for the memories
Love the soup recipe! I just LOVED “The Fonz”! Ayyyyyyyyyy….
I remember some of these things and I’m an 80′s child, but I got some holdovers from my sister (born 1972). She had a whole tub of different Strawberry Shortcake dolls that I used to play with all the time. I also loved my slip-n-slide, Simon (still love that game), and Laura Ingalls Wilder. In 4th grade we had the “Patriotic Program” where each kid in the whole grade dressed up as a historical character and gave a short autobiographical speech as if they were that person. Every girl (including me) wanted to be Laura. I still remember being bitter against the girl who got to be her!
What about Cabbage Patch Kids? Or were they in the 80s? I seem to remember inheriting those dolls from my sister too.
Oh yeah, and my neighbors and I accidentally tipped over the swingset once and it landed on one girl, breaking her arm! It almost tipped countless other times.
I’m with Jersey I remember some of these things, but I’m an 80′s girl (Leg warmers, jellies, slap bracelets)l!
Sunshine Family!! I loved them!!! What about Mrs. Beasley dolls? And Ragedy Ann and Andy? I remembered ALL of that. Sigh. I feel old now. LOL
I was a little girl in the “60′s” but I could relate to so many of those. The best memory is the gift of Donny and Marie concert tickets that a friends mom gave us for graduation. I remember sitting out in the audience so thrilled that I was really getting to see them in peron(that was 1977). I also had that Dr. kit and also remember the layered haircuts that looked like wings on the side of the head. Thanks for taking me back!
How about suspenders-the wackier the better- with high waisted jeans. Also leg warmers or was that the 80′s?
Yep I remember most of those things too, being just slightly younger than you. I had an autographed picture of John Schneider. I remember going to Kmart to buy 45s. My bike with the banana seat was yellow and I had a snazzy white basket in front. Hmm do you remember leg warmers, jams shorts, banana clips, Square Pegs, Facts of Life? Some of that might be early 80s. I remember the friendship pins, feathered hair and the comb in the back pocket. How about that police show – CHIPs? I had a crush on Erik Estrada. I still have my Holly Amy doll – the girls sleep with it. Does Love’s Baby Soft or Rain still exist? My girls would love it – pink! Were Trax sneakers (Kmart brand) in the 70s?
hahaha can’t relate to most of that…….tho I can with a small handfull!
The GOOD, The BAD of american Chinese food
The food I will write about, is on Chinese Food. It will be about what kind of Chinese food I like. Plus I will talk about good Chinese restaurants, and BAD Chinese restaurants. But I still love Chinese food anyway. I hope this will broaden you’re view of Chinese food.
Here are my usual favorite choices in Chinese food, though really in china ACTUAL Chinese food is quite different (if you can stomach cat brains, and chicken guts). The important dish you must have in a Chinese restaurant is FRIED RICE *preferably combination*. For my usual main coarse I have Chop Suey, a great dish of beef and vegetables. Plus a nice bowl of wonton soup (for some reason, my home town is sparse in this great dish). Now you know what Chinese food is my usual taste.
“Next are stories of my experiences at the Chinese restaurants Bamboo Pavilion, and Ho-Wah.
The worst time I’ve had was at a Chinese restaurant entitled “Ho-Wah”. It was on the mothers day and me & my family went to eat out for the holiday. We all decided to eat at Ho-Wah. When we were there, I ordered just a bowl of wonton noodle soup. While some of my other family ordered prawns, and chicken. When I got my dish, the soup looked greasy “and I could ACTUALLY see the pure oil and fat flowing in the broth!” Then I looked over at the other dishes every one got. One looked raw, another undercooked, and some that just didn’t look fresh or edible! Soon after we all finished eating… we were all hurting at the same time. Later we all had succumbed to FOOD POISONING. All of us had Pepto Bismal for desert. Plus we knew NEVER to eat at that restaurant again…
But now for a better side of my chosen food topic for the essay. “Bamboo Pavilion” has always been a restaurant of choice from ever since I was born! If I’m right that has been the first restaurant I’ve been to after being birthed. That place feels like home to me when I go. It was were I had my first family dinner I had, and also the last place my last grandparents enjoyed (till there time came). Bamboo always brings back good memories for me with great food.
I hope this essay shared good stories of Chinese food experiences. It’s one of my favorite types of food culture. Though I LOVE lots of food (even though I’m a bit of a fat but right now).
I was a teen in the 70′s, but I recognize ‘em all….you wore short skirts and hot pants! (shorts)
Where did my comment go?
Perhaps I’ve gone batty and forgot to post it….
Okay, this was scary. Did you read my journal and peruse my life? I think that this just about described my growing up years!
See you at church tomorrow!
Lisa
Thanks for all those memories! You’re a bit younger than me, but feathered wings – how did we ever get our hair to do an about-face and lay in the opposite direction? Yes, to Malibu Barbie and her groovy group of tanned friends…to recording songs off the radio…to metal lunch boxes (Partridge Family)…to Love’s Baby Soft.
Anyone for Bonne Bell Lip Smackers – the huge ones? Add-a-bead necklaces? Jokari?
I hear Holly Hobbie is making a comeback. And, YES, Trax was a KMart brand because I had a pair and was so embarrassed to wear them!
Oh, my word! Talk about a trip down memory lane! I can’t believe it! I remember every single one of those things except for friendship pins on tennis shoes! I was definitely a child of the seventies! Prairie skirts, pixie cuts, gauchos, ribbon barrettes, feathered hair with the comb in the back pocket, Dukes of Hazzard, Are you there, God?, Love’s Baby Soft, roll-on lip gloss–ALL those really hit home with me! Amazing how many I had totally forgotten!
But they didn’t mention the skate key! That was a pretty important piece of equipment. And there was also that Bonne Bell lip gloss in the great big tubes (like deoderant size) that came in a zillion different flavors.
Thanks for posting this. It gave me a good smile!
Btw, I went to David’s site and tried the idiot test #1. I never did get through it. (blush) Very fun though!
Interesting! You are inbetween me and my firstborn. I had brown corduroy knickers, but when we went to somebody else’s house it was expected that we would inspect the record collection.
