About a Year
I signed up for a writing challenge blogring, the Kween_of_the_Queens. My first assignment was to go through my weblogs from 2007 and take the first sentence from each month and write it down. One sentence didn’t seem enough, so you get more. Lucky you, eh? (If you want to read the whole entry, click on the date.)
January 1–Happy
New Year to you! We rang in 2007 with a crush at our house. By my
count, we had 103 people here for the party. [There was a later edit taking the total to 108. Where did I get 121 that I reported a few days ago?]
February 1–I
have often been asked how many words per minute I read. I’m not sure. I
wondered if others might be curious to know their reading speed as
well, so I’ve put together a “test your reading speed” entry for today.
March 2–This
morning, the menfolk in my house packed up and headed out to the Big 10
wrestling championships in Lansing, MI. . . . So, that left the girls at home, all by their lonesomes. What to do? What to do? Hee hee. As if we needed any ideas!
April 1–I’m
baking cookies right now–chocolate chip, except with dark chocolate
chunks. Mmmm. Will these be cookies of consolation or a bite of
victory? I have until 11:00 EST to find out. Win or lose, it’s been
such fun!
May 1–According to The Writer’s Almanac: “Today is May Day, a day on which you should wash
your face with morning dew to keep yourself looking young and beautiful. You
should also gather wildflowers and green branches, make some floral garlands,
and set up a Maypole to dance around.” Woo! Let’s go! Perhaps we could stomp some dandelions to death along the way!
June 1–Today
is supposed to be our first day of summer vacation as yesterday was Day
180 of school. But, some of the children (who shall remain nameless)
did not complete their checklists which I told them 2.5 weeks ago MUST
be done. So, they are under “house arrest” until finished: no music,
iPod, TV, reading non-school books, books on tape, going anywhere
“fun,” and so on.
July 2–I
have discovered that I’ve not planned very well for this trip to
England. We leave Saturday, and most normal people would have all their
ducks in a row at this point. Usually I’d have all my downy friends
lined up as well, but not this time. What was I thinking? Last night
my mind was in a swirl and my stomach spinning to match while I thought
of all I’d not done. [Urgh. I have visions of this again... we leave on Wednesday!]
August 4–Howdy,
Ya’ll! I just got back from a week of being a camp counselor at a
Gold-Rush/true treasure in Christ camp. I had five 10-12 year old girls
(plus Little Miss) in my cabin.
September 3–It’s
the first day of school tomorrow. Oh, boy! I’m getting up early to make
pancakes. I might even wear a denim jumper. Wait. I don’t have one.
October 1–May tomorrow be a better day.
November 3–I’m
busily tapping away at my NaNoWriMo novel–5271 words, not counting the
10,000 or so I had before I started. I feel like a day trader, except
it’s not my stock portfolio increasing by leaps and bounds, it’s my
word count!
December 1–I’m at my mom’s house. This weekend is the annual Curwensville United Methodist Church’s Christmas pageant, The Search for Peace.
Do you remember any of these entries? Is there an entry you wrote last year that you remember fondly? Leave the link for it in the comments section so we can all enjoy it, too!

Milady,
Great entry! And oh, by the way, I’m coming back to check out February’s entry. . . I read a lot and love it, would love to find out my “wpm” for reading! You’ve been starred and linked!~Kween
Welcome to the Kween of Queens! Nice entry! I noticed you said the men in your house went to Big 10 wrestling. My son wrestles in High School.
Let’s put it this way, when my mom was my age – I was 24 years old! I’m a bit behind her in that area since my daughter is 13 years old.
Hey teacherperson, thanks for dropping by. I’m Grampy, nice to meet you. I have all sorts of posts, some just plain goofy and some serious. Don’t guess I have any favorites. One goofy one that I did not too long ago some of your readers might get a kick out of was a skit I did back years ago. I re did it speaking into my mp3 player and put it on my xanga and put a giraffe chewing that made it look like he’s talking. Here’s the link. http://www.xanga.com/UnworthyofHisgrace/626969052/sam-spade-private-eye.html
You might have to go down to the bottom of the page and pause the song I have playing on my site before clicking the xanga player for Sam Spade. Hope you have a good laugh!
God Bless ya!
~Grampy~
What an awesome entry! Welcome to our group…you really are going to love it
I might have to go look at your England entry…I lived there for 6 months in 2005/2006!
Welcome and Happy New Year!
What a fun idea for an entry! I just might have to steal it.
wow, you’re a busy one, aren’t you? where did you put 125 people?
I jumped on the bandwagon as well.. LOL I thought it was neat idea to do.. I join in xanga world in beginning of 2006 if I can remmy so I was able to cover the whole year of 2007..
I remember the most is the England trips blogs.. That was the stuff I enjoy the most cuz I’m a traveler.. I love to travel all over and learn about other places/cultures and all..
That’s very interesting.
Glad ya enjoyed it. I can get pretty goofy sometimes. Actually my dad wrote it in College with some of his frat brothers. He re wrote it to tame it down a bit from it’s original form
Hope God blesses your new year with all sorts of wonderful blessings!
~Grampy~
RYC: I beg to differ. . . you did this challenge just right for you! And that’s what counts! Hey, it’s the best when I can read everyone’s style! Like the “Kween” said “Great entry!” The Kween would be me! And now I’ve got to take that reading test!
~Jeri
oops! I’ll have to do that later. . .I’m on my laptop and it’s not hooked up to the printer (I don’t want to read 25% slower!) I’ll keep it in my brain to get back here to do this!~Jeri
Hi! Wish you a prosperous 2008!
Hmmm… definitely peaked my interest, I may be back to read some of those entries! Sounds like you homeschool…. and travel, and read and write. Busy, busy, busy!
what a grand idea! Believe it or not I actually do remember most of those entries, now that I hear them again.
RYC- Back now!
Book sounds fun. I hvae heard good things about the author.
April 16th 19–
I could never, never see your face too much
I do not have a particular entry that I wrote that stands out in my mind.
Now I don’t have to go back and read all your posts.
Great post! I’ll be back to read more, starting with that Feb. entry. Happy New Year and welcome to the blogring!
This is definitely a 5 star entry! I don’t remember the May day entry. I might not have been reading you yet!
^ You’ll probably want to delete the entry above me. (shaking head)
Didn’t you do this last year? Was that you? I remember some of these entries…but I’m one of those hit-and-miss blog readers…so I don’t remember all of them.
Your always so full of enthusiasm….WHAT AN INSPIRATION!!!
Great entry! Thanks for sharing. I like the way you write!
Do you homeschool? I’ll have to try that speed reading test as well!
Fun idea! I DO remember some of those entries.
Heh-heh! I remember the one in September because of the denim jumper comment. I laughed my head off when I read that for the first time (mostly because it would be true at our house for OUR teacher.
)
Victoria
ryc: Thanks!! I love Jacob Black, course after Eclipse, not so much! Did you hear they are making Twilight into a movie? They’ve already started casting. They’ve cast Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory) as Edward and Kristen Stewart as Bella – of course, as always I’m sure the movie won’t be as good, but I’m looking forward to it none the less. Course, they’re not planning on beginning production until 2008 – ugh!
Hello! Great entry! How was England?
RYC: I love James Patterson. I’m a big fan! I’m interested in his Dr. Cross series . . . Along Came a Spider, etc. I have the last two novels to read. Right now though I’m reading Patricia Cornwell, which is kinda boring, real technical, but I have to finish her series.
Your year made me tired just reading the recap. Where do you find the time?
I love year- in -review posts! I would have remembered the May post if had been reading then…I LOVE dandelions and think they are much maligned! They are so CHEERFUL! I delete my posts regularly, so none to link to or pull up! Sounds like you had a good year.
That was a fun idea! It was pretty interesting to read the first sentence snippets on what you wrote about last year.
Cool. I remember most of those posts. Especially the denim jumper one.
Its kind of odd. It doesn’t seem like I’ve been reading your blog for a whole year, but I guess I have. Your first comment (I think) on my mom’s blog was in mid-November of 06.
OH MY GOSH! The Sept. 3rd entry…You’de have to home school to see the humor in that. I don’t own a denim jumper either, what’s wrong with us? We failed as teachers…
Lovely entry!
I have also done this
Cannot believe what I wrote for the beginning of 2007
I would leave a link to one of my favorite entries but I don’t know how. Anywho, if you care to go to it, it is titled “Girlish Nonsense” it was posted in August!
I enjoyed reading this post!
great post and welcome!
Oops, I forgot to say “TEACHER POWER!!!”
Dear Mary,
I’m visiting from the KOTQ blogring topic. I just joined the ring and am participating. Participatory blogrings always seem to gain me a few more internet friends and perhaps readers and subscribers to my own blog, so I’m always looking for good participatory rings. I didn’t know men were allowed in the KOTQ (possibly because of it’s title) but since Jeri Dee invited me, I joined.
You’re about the 10th or 12th entry I’ve read, and with each one, I wondered when somebody would have the foresight to include links! I see you’re the first to do just that. It makes it a lot easier for the casual reader to find the entry if they’re interested in the first line. We’re on the internet after all, which is based on links. Thank you for providing them. I read the entry about words per minute. I don’t have Word on my home puter, so can’t play, but I’ll have to come back and see how many wpm I read. I studied speed reading in school long ago, and spent college as an English major, so it came in handy when I had to read multiple novels a week. Now all I read is blogs, but I speed through them quite quickly.
I see you wrote a NaNoWriMo novel. I’m witing two or three “reminiscence” novels online on my website, but I’ve never “forced” myself to write. I don’t even blog that regularly.
You blogged last Jan. about having over a 100 people at your New Year’s party and from the look of the photos on your previous entry, you must have had a great turnout this year as well. I was in bed myself.
Happy new year, and nice to meet you. I see you are new to this blogring too, so welcome even though I’m new myself!
Michael F. Nyiri, poet, philosopher, fool
I scanned your profile and found that you are an Austen fan… I like you already!
Did you EVER have a denim jumper? You did say it was the uniform, didn’t you? I remember because it answered a long-pondered question of mine. Last quarter we did poster presentations in lieu of a final. We were supposed to wear professional clothing. Ha! my “professional” garments are stained sweatshirts and tennies. I was thinking about getting a denim jumper, but I was pretty sure he meant “office professional” attire. I wore the suit I wore to Secunda’s wedding. It was red and it was right before Christmas, though I may have been a tad overdressed. I got full credit for that part of the presentation though.
And here you are, getting ready to go to England again! I am excited for you. There is postal service over there, so if you forget anything, I’m sure there is a way to get it. Hope you aren’t stressing so much this trip.
I read through the Pamela Aidan triolgy that I bought my mother on your recommendation. I really enjoyed it as did she. Thanks. If you have any more recommendations along those lines, I’m all ears.
I may have to do this challenge. It is fun reading through yours.
I enjoyed your blog. Made me want to read more and so…maybe I will…after I have read all the other members blogs for this challenge.
Thanks for sharing. I like the October post… May tomorrow be a better day. Oh how many days I say that! lol
Welcome! Sounds like you had a busy year!
Hi there- I have really liked reading everyone’s snipits, haven’t you? I am afraid that I didn’t follow the rules very well, because some of mine are paragraphs!! what can I say?
I would love to come back and visit- will talk to you soon.
i’m going to have to take the reading test – it sounds interesting!
i live in the uk – which part of england did you visit and did you enjoy it?
Busy, busy, year!!! Good post. peace
