Hairy Monday
Wow. I had a secret hope that I would get as many comments on my last post as I was years old. But, I got my mother’s age in comments! That huge number was a present in itself!
What’s been going on…hmm…
Saturday, TGD and I went to see Enchanted. I went prepared to laugh and to like it, and I did. I joked with TGD that he’d be the oldest guy there without a child along. However, there seemed to be a number of grown up people there on dates. The movie was clean and entertaining. There was no swearing, very little sex stuff (kissing, princess off-the-shoulder dresses, and the six year old warning the princess while they had their hair done, “Men are only after one thing.” “What?” said the wide-eyed princess. “I don’t know!” answered the little girl.), and a fun blend of kid things (the chipmunk and cartoon) and grown up stuff (Um…I suppose it was grown up stuff. I laughed.) I also found it interesting that the princess was in her thirties.
Speaking of grown up stuff, I found the latest issue of People magazine at my mom’s house over Thanksgiving. It was the sexiest man issue. (Matt Damon was this year’s winner, in case you care.) I was surprised at the number of men who had facial hair, or at least facial scruff, in the issue. I got a real kick out of the comment of one of the featured fellows, Ryan Reynolds (Scarlett Johansson’s boyfriend), “…it is important to note that being scruffy has absolutely nothing to do with women It has everything to do with independence…and with what women might like.” HA! So, facial hair is in. See, I always knew my Good Doctor was stylish!
Do you read People magazine? What’s your guilty “doctor’s office” read?PS–Since I was asked, my real presents were
- a print of The Garden of Eden by Briton Riviere
- a coupon to get my van totally cleaned inside
- a lap desk so I can work with my laptop on my lap and not get hot legs
- a silver bookmark
- a blue brooch
- a pair of black, stretchy gloves
- a Cinderella washcloth
- three old candy canes (aged to perfection? Um…)
- two cable-knit sweaters
- two three-quarter-length-sleeve sweaters
- a miniature iron for quilting
- a silky top
- tea
- a notepad
- a music box
- money
- much love and joy from all my friends
It was claimed that introducing me to Ninja Warrior on Friday counted as a present (even though I’ll probably never see the show again). I beg to differ, cheap children.

Wait, wait, wait….your mother’s age?!? Are you being facetious or are you really a spring chicken?
My kids liked the movie.
You know, I could be the ‘sexiest man alive.’ Of course, we’d have to kill about 3 Billion other guys first.
I’m sorry I missed your birthday! Happy Birthday!!!
Enchanted sounds just enchanting. I’d like to go see it. Hmmm….. our anniversary is this week, maybe that warrants a date.
Facial hair? Ugh! I don’t like men with hairy faces. I’ve put up with Mike’s mussie, but only as long as he keeps it trimmed so it doesn’t feel like a broom up my nose when we kiss. haha He’s started to grow a beard to play Jesus in our skit, but he could never grow one because it’s too spotty. He still can’t grow one! lol He only has a “goatie,” but it is so blond on his chin, it isn’t noticeable! Anyway, I’m happy to say it WILL come off after Sunday!
Guilty dr.’s office reads? I’m too embarrassed to say.
Actually, I like to look at decks & country house magazines.
Glad to hear your opinions on Enchanted…maybe I’ll rent it when it comes out on DVD or something. It sounds cute.
So sorry I missed giving you birthday comments – happy, happy belated birthday!! And, for the gift of several posts ago, I would give you one free day devoid of school, car-trips and obligations, to spend however like doing whatever you want.
Mmm, I’ve never read any of those celeb mags, although this fall, to help me figure out some ideas of hairstyles, I did buy a copy of Sophisticate’s hair magazine, which was kind of fun (even though it didn’t do much help with the styles, since I don’t want to spend two hours every morning curling my hair when I know it’s just going to straighten within the next half hour…) I think the best part was that Vanessa Hudgens happened to be featured in that issue, and I absolutely adore her hairstyle.
I’m glad you clarified that Ryan Reynolds was Scarlett Johannson’s boyfriend–that cleared that right up. Now I know exactly who you’re talking about…NOT.
I beg to differ, cheap children. – Hee-hee!
I don’t read magazines (they’re anathema to me). I always try to have a book with me if I know I’ll be waiting around for something. Otherwise I play games on my cell phone / mp3 player.
Sounds like you had a fun birthday
God is good. Enjoy your gifts sweetie. God bless you.
Cynthia
What a truckload of loot!
38!! ee-gads! I’m closer in age to your mom than you!!! Ah….I feel ancient!!
To answer your questions . . .
1. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Morocco, Indiana, about 15 miles from here, which is where both my parents grew up.
2. If you went to Barnes and Noble, which section would you more than likely browse first (or purchase a book from)? I always look at the Bargain racks, just in case I find something I may *need*. Then I’d probably go to the classics or biography section or maybe current events, but if I don’t really need to look for something, I’m inclined to go grab several magazines, a nice cup of coffee, and go sit down and flip through them. I usually look through home decorating ones, trying to get inspired in some way or another.
3. It’s dessert time! Which one do you pick? Hmmm . . . something chocolate or a nice cheesecake.
Wow, some great presents there, my friend!! Glad you had a good day!!
Great entry.
I am secretly hoping for my age in comments.
Dan who?
wow! you made out like a bandit with bday presents! were the candy canes from a child? how sweet!
we saw Enchanted and loved it too! my hubby was laughing uproariously throughout, part of the fun was to see who the cartoons would turn into as real actors (i hadn’t looked before hand). my fav line? “You’re so melodramatic.” Prince Charming: “Well, I don’t know what that means, but….” my sons fav line? Evil servant: “Do you like yourself?” Prince Charming: “What’s not to like????” lol (apparently we both found prince charming funny!) I also found it interesting that the princess had *gasp* wrinkles!
I don’t need magazines. I am always prepared with a book.
Hey, that’s not as cheap as a Babe Ruth and a penny!! rofl!! Do you remember that?
You did very well with your birthday gifts!! It sounds like you had a great birthday.
I love that you were amused with the princess in her 30s. I too consider myself a princess or perhaps a queen. Whatever I am, I am definitely royalty
I don’t go to the doctor’s office–at least not if I can help it. If there I usually read ancient National or Canadian Geographic magazines–they must get all their magazines by donation (after they’ve been hanging around someone’s house for five years).
Your Birthday gifts sound wonderful! And so many! I’m usually lucky if I get more than two. But in another year and a bit, I’ll expect at least 40!
I’ll take presents number 2 and 3. Wow, a clean van on the inside, what a dream! My 2nd oldest boy told me our van was so yucky that we should just throw it away and get a new one. I told them no new cars until they aren’t around to make them worthy of the trash dump.
And to not have hot legs from using the laptop, yet another dream.
Three old candy canes and a Cinderella washcloth. How interesing. I wonder who gave you those. We have a few of those things around here. When I was doing middle school Sunday School, I’d bring one or two such items to class every Sunday and award them as “prizes” to tuned in student participants. Everybody won. I got some gimcracks out of my house, and the kids got public recognition.
My family went as a group with Peach Blossom’s family to see Enchanted Saturday as well. Peach Blossom is Quartus’ new wife. She’s a doll and she likes to organize things, (like an inter-family movie date). We like her a lot. Everybody enjoyed Enchanted, and it got some big laughs from my Qintus, who is currently sporting some facial hair. We left singing “How will she know that he loves her.”
I love chins, so I’m not a huge fan of facial hair, and Quintus has such a beautiful face. How would you feel about seeing Hunter’s face disappear behind the bush? Do you like beards or scruff? Mr. M has had a beard before. He says they itch, and curl in around themselves till they pull. He had a mustache for years and years too.
I love facial hair on most men. Once in a while I see a guy who looks better without a beard, but I think facial hair is usually super sexy!
I always bring a book to the Dr. or dentist or car place or whatever. I just never get to read them due to the kids that I also bring!
So glad you had a wonderful birthday my dear. I hope you have a hundred more.
P.S. I made a sandwhich so good that I need a whole seperate blog entry for it so be on the lookout.
Ok fellow goof, you can look now.
We saw Enchanted on Thanksgiving Day morning and loved it! Going to the theatre isn’t something we do often, but this movie made it worth the expense (there are 10 of us…) and time. I saw the reviews weren’t very positive, but hope people ignore them as this is pure entertainment.
I’m glad you enjoyed your birthday. You certainly got lots of presents!
Facial hair…my hubby is a blonde and when he would grow his beard-it was red and scraggly. Blonde and scraggly red were not a good look for him and I was glad when he shaved it off. I like the rugged dark facial hair, but it has to be on the right face. My hubby looks best clean shaven.
(Plus his dimples can show up. They are the most interesting part of a face to me.)
Hehe, I figured out what painting your print was of before I went to the link. Makes me feel intellegent or something.
Or maybe it would be more realistic to say that I’m a nerdy person who loves pretty paintings.
I want to see Enchanted so badly! I know I’m going to love it to pieces. However, I read the review on Plugged In, and they said something about characters being gracious when they changed their love interest or something. That set the wheels off in my brain… maybe Gizelle stays in the real world and becomes the mom of the cute little girl. And now that the thought has entered my head, I can’t shake it and I so want it to happen and I’m going to be mad if it doesn’t! I need to find someone to tell me how it ends… any takers?
I’d say you did pretty well! Love the painting, and all the other stuff sounds like such fun.
And I’m thinking that you must be a pretty awesome writer if you get that many comments. soooo…how’s the novel coming?
I found that copy of People on the plane yesterday and I must admit I read it too. I was actually surprised at the number of “nerdy” men that were deemed “sexy” (Of course I already new that)! However, my true guilty pleasure in In Style magazine, but I’m not really allowed to read it. One look in the big book and I immediately go out and spent way too much money on clothes, I’m an advertisers best friend!
Good teachers keep on teaching even after school ends.
Aha! My laziness in the shaving department is justified!
Oh gosh……..I missed it so here it is late………♫♫♫♫ That is my song to you! hahahahaa
Happy belated Birthday and I think you are right about the Ninja warrior thing.
So glad you had a fun day! Thanks for the movie review! It looked like fun from the trailers, but it’s always good to hear from someone who has seen the whole movie!
Happy birthday!
Thanks for letting me know about Dan’s surprise bday too.
Chiastic–LOL! You got me–I had to go look it up! Good one.
Glad you had a great day! Thanks for the movie review. I was wanting to take my daughter to it this weekend.
one can never have too many Cinderella Washclothes.
Nope, you did each cat once.
Belated birthday wishes to you! Sounds like you had a fun day (weekend).
