Waiting Is Fun!
Today I thought I’d start Round Two of math project writing. But, there was nothing to write! The outline of “magazine articles” was not done, so I could not begin to write those. The project magazines for which I am to write student guides were not written either, so I couldn’t write those. What’s a girl to do? Well, this girl went out and had some fun!
TGD and I went out to lunch. (Gockle, who was having a rough day came along as well.) We chatted about our family trip to England January to May 2008. Perhaps you have not heard about this trip. TGD has a “sabbatical” the Spring 2008 semester. We are planning to head to Cambridge, England, for that time so he can do research at the Newton Institute there. I’m planning a whole bunch of touring with the children. We got word today that the Newton Institute will pay generously, so we should have our rent and food in England covered!
After lunch, I took Gockle to buy an Airsoft gun. It’s one of those things that boys run around and shoot each other with. It’s got “soft” BBs. Said gun is now confiscated for the next 24 hours since someone didn’t practice good gun safety, but I digress.
When I got home, there was still nothing waiting for me in my inbox, so I decided to walk with LW. We had a nice, yet sweaty and thirsty walk. The gypsy moth caterpillars here are horrid. When you walk through a wooded area, it sounds like rain because of all the caterpillar poo falling down. Some of the oak trees are totally leafless. Nasty buggers.
Around suppertime, I got an email. “Can you and another writer do the outline?” You bet! A seven minute phone call from Los Angles, and the outline was mostly hashed out. (Call me Mrs. Efficient!) Out the door to a church softball game. The weather was excellent. The team played not-so-well. I’ve seen them play amazingly well, but tonight was just not their night. (TGD was three for four, though. That’s my man!)
Home again to a bowl of ice cream. No outline in my inbox. I decided to write a “magazine” article anyhow on forensic science in history. So, I don’t feel that I’ve done nothing today. (Yes, I believe that sentence to be grammatically correct! )
Here’s a fun quiz. If you take it, do tell “who you are.” Would you have pegged me as Lydia?
t

Oooh, airsoft is awesome!!
And you were Lydia? I think I was least like her when I took the quiz. I love taking those personality things…even though most of them are pretty much bogus. They’re still fun.
I can’t resist these things!
Surprisingly, I scored as Elizabeth Bennet: “You are independent, passionate and unconventional, with a sharp tongue and a quick mind. But you have a quick temper and sometimes forget who you’re talking to…You are independent, passionate and unconventional, with a sharp tongue and a quick mind. But you have a quick temper and sometimes forget who you’re talking to…” I don’t think it’s quite accurate though – I’m usually only unconventional when my friends go along, I’m not sure (hopefully!) about the sharp tongue, and I’m not sensible or have the ready answers that she did. Hmmm. My second best was Charlotte Lucas…
Glad your girl is better! And you are going to England, not to visit, but to live for a bout! What a wonderful opportunity!!! So glad for you!
And, I’m a Mr. Darcy! Shocking!!!
Great quiz – I couldn’t resist. I scored first as Charlotte Lucas, but I didn’t think that was right at all. I was expecting Jane or Bingley and when I took it the second time I got Bingley. I accidentally answered “Never!” to “I would never marry for money” – ha, oops! Darn double negatives.
By the description they give for Lydia, I can see it fitting you. I wouldn’t have guessed it though as they leave out the tactless, foolish part of her personality!
A whole semester in Cambridge? Wow, I’m even more jealous than before. What a great learning experience for you all!
AIRSOFT!!!!! Hope he has fun with it once it is returned to him.
I scored as Mr. Darcy, which I rather knew I would.
Oh, do come!!! I would love to see you and catch you up on my life down here. I am leaving for Brazil on July 20th and getting back Aug 5th. Hope to see you soon!
Hmm I took that quiz and came up as Elizabeth Bennet. :)
That England trip sound soo tempting to go.. I would have go if I had the funds.. lol So be sure to bring back some pictures and information about it..
Airsoft guns and 4 months in England? I am jealous!
I am….Elizabeth Bennet.
England! oooooohhhhhhhhh. That is wonderful.
When I was young my family traveled alot because of my father’s work. What a wonderful experience it was. I hope your children benefit and treasure this opportunity like I did!
I can’t even believe I did this, but I ended up as Mr. Bingley. What do you think?
I don’t understand why my name didn’t show up on the last comment, just proves that I normally shun the internet and usually can’t figure it out(or maybe I just don’t want to). Anyway, this is Biscuit’s Mom, and I ended up as Mr. Bingley. J was Mr. Darcy. C is still sleeping, but I’m sure she will want to take the quiz immediately upon awakening.
hi tp. i came up as darcy. how funny! i stole the link for my site, hope you don’t mind.
i can’t believe you were lydia. haha. who are you running away to england with? (o wait…that was the inappropriate thing to ask–guess i am darcy?)
Regarding your “spicy” comment… I nearly snorted with laughter. Oddly enough… Especially if you consider that I don’t snort.
Your England semester trip sounds A-MA-ZING!
And, I’m Mr. Darcy.
It takes longer to complete that quiz than it did to read the book!
Glad your young’un is feeling better
I knew you were going to England, but I didn’t realize it was going to be such a long trip! Sounds like fun. Do you have someone to take care of your home & stuff? I wouldn’t know how to keep up with home things for so long while I’m somewhere else.
That was a long quiz! I’m Mr. Darcy. How did that happen?
Hey, there! You’ve got a fantastic Xanga. Linked to you via AimeeAnne, my “Mom”, and am now happily subscribed.
I’m Elizabeth, by the way.
That makes my mind boggle, to say the least.
I thought it might be interesting for you to know that I was Mr. Darcy, which is rather odd. I would think that his personality would be the least like mine, since I’m sort-of loud and chatty. Although it is comforting to know that he does have good characteristics that anyone would want to have.
bewildered,
~VictoriaTheClown
oooh…my compy blocked the quiz! are you taking inappropriate quizzes, Mrs. sellers?
Haha a neat quiz…I turned out to be Elizabeth. But I was 80% Lydia!!!
we can play pinocle if ya like.. I suppose I need to give yall two a chance to make up for that hearts game ; )
Aimee’s actual relation to me is questioned by her mother, and my mother that lives in the same time zone, state, and house as me.
But I digress from what is actually important.
[cue a random subject change]
I can certainly understand the confusion. Thus, the Truth comes out.
Hard as it is to admit, I’m merely Aimee’s friend. I live in Maine, and met her through my work with the organization TeenPact.
But let’s both pretend that I never had to explain that.
so, Mary, are you going to Engand *twice*? Once this summer and then back again for the spring semester? Spending so long there sounds wonderful. I hope you don’t plan on doing any regular schoolwork…well, except having the kids write about the trip. I guess we’ll be kept updated via your blog? Hmmm, just remembered, I had hoped to go to England next year for the Sackett family reunion…yes, I’m descended from Sacketts although they have nothing to do with the Sacketts in the Louie L’Amour books (they’re just a family L’Amour made up) and I don’t know the relationship of the Sackett who has something to do with the building on the PSU campus. I think he was dean of engineering or something. But the Sackett reunion this year is in Fort Wayne, Indiana and next year it’s in England. But it’s probably in the summer and you’d be gone by then.
Sorry, I’m afraid I’d be of no help in that area. The first problem, of course, arises from the simple fact that average height varied as much from place to place in the ancient Western World as it does in the Modern one. I know that Thracians, for instance, were usually tall, even by today’s standards, whereas Egyptians were usually rather short–but I could only guess at average heights. Moreover, I imagine that it would also depend on which period of the ancient world you were looking for, since one could reasonably imagine that the Thracians who fought at Troy (circa 1200 B.C.) may well have been considerably taller or shorter than the ones Spartacus was born among (circa 90 B.C.). Likewise the men who founded Rome in 752 B.C. probably differed considerably in height from those who were present at its fall around 500 A.D.
In other words, I don’t know of anything that would be of much help. I would suggest, however, that you look for a specific area, race, or nation and try to find out about the average heights thereof. I think you would have the best chance of finding something you could use that way. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.
Not to scare you more but for the first time my wife eased up as parents and got my sons air soft guns for Christmas. The oldest got shot in the eye. We had to take him to the doctor every day for two weeks. We took the guns away from them. They are air soft guns but they can do a ton of damage because they are so powerful.
That’s awesome you’re going to England!!! Have a great time!!!!
My son had the eye goggles and he didn’t wear them that day. He went running outside and my wife yelled “Don’t forget your eye goggles.” He responded, “Mom, I have to get going.” She said, “Ok, don’t come crying to me if you get hurt.” He came in must minutes later crying.
Now that’s a trip!!
I scored as a Mr. Darcy! LOL
RYC: Yep, Crouse started the wheels turning (yes, that is a pun!). KID did take it to IN with the boyz. Since we already put about 2500 miles on it, we have sufficiently tested it.
I’m OK, keeping busy with painting and lessons to prepare.
Thanks! Good idea.
Are you a State College resident?!
I scored as a Mr. Darcy…with Elizabeth Bennett a very close second. Lowest score? Lydia.
Oh, and I very much am looking forward to seeing all your photos. Did you say you are going to be in the UK for two weeks? I can’t remember. Cheers! ~M.E.

Good grief; I tried to copy and paste the results and look what happened! sorry about that.
RYC: We’re working with our teen group at church, and the teens are doing the puppet shows for vacation bible school. I was a puppet in my younger years, lol, but right now I am “on call”.
Now, that sabbatical sounds wonderful. Do take lots of pictures so that we can live it vicariously through you!
(Do I see a semester of British Literature on docket?)
My boys had a brief flirtation with airsoft guns. Quartus is selling his paintball setup. My boy is growing up. I want to take your quiz, but besafe won’t let me. I NEVER would have pegged you as a Lydia type. A trivia queston: Is Horatio Hornblower’s wife the actress who plays Lydia? I guess I should just look it up.
My son has lived there the last 2 years, and will spend the first year of his married life there; my daughter is there now, working in a used book store/cafe! We also have good friends living there. He’s a Spanish prof at the university. I hear it’s a great place to homeschool, as the public school is very open to participation. I’m jealous!
hahaha!! I scored as Lydia Bennet too! I’m not sure…is that a good thing?
Ooh! A spring sabbatical in England…how exciting! We spent a semester in London for my dad’s sabbatical when I was in middle school, and it was great. I suspect that you will find the same thing.
Glad to hear that LibbyK is doing better…hopefully the rest of you are well too!
