  • Strawberry Day

Those small bites of summer, brilliant red and sweet.

This morning, we woke to sunshine and cooler weather. Being Saturday, I didn’t feel my usual guilt over sleeping in.  After a hasty breakfast of a chocolate chip cookie, I headed out the door to register the children for our summer park program. (Free and fun!)  Back home again, I worked on the math writing and realized that I only had six lessons to write, not seven, which meant I only have one to do. (Which is waiting on someone else to finish before I can work on it.)  Woo!  Then, AB and her daughter Melchizedek arrived (not her REAL name!) to pick strawberries.  I live within walking distance of a strawberry farm, Way’s Fruit Farm. Little Miss, LibbyK, and I wound up picking 14.25 pounds of berries.

I came home and sliced, sliced, and sliced.  No jelly here! I want to freeze them for fruit smoothies all year long. Gockle arrived home from his sleepover with his friend E. Mel and sister stayed to swim, and GhostFroggy and Dance4eternity had also arrived to dip their tootsies in the pool. Since I had so many people here, I thought, “Why not have a cookout?”

TGD and Hunter loaded the “burn pit” (a concrete block campfire area) with wood and soon had a fine fire for roasting Oscar Meyer.  The Timmy B’s and some Wilsons came. It was so lovely to sit and chat and let the evening sun warm our necks while we filled up on hot dogs, pasta salad, and strawberry shortcake.

The kids hopped back in the pool, and the four remaining adults came inside to play pinochle.  (The guys won, but I claim a personal victory for befuddling poor Timmy B a magic trick.)

Now, crickets are chirping. The ceiling fan hums quietly, and the black satin sky begs to be draped over my eyes. What a wonderful strawberry day.

  • Whoa…that’s a lot of strawberries!!

We had a really nice Saturday as well.  Dad had a huge bonfire in the back and we roasted marshmallows and sang.

Isn’t it awesome to be done with school??

  • Strawberries aren’t ready here, at least I don’t think they are.  We are at the end of asparagus season and coming into sweet cherry season.  I have a hard time pegging your climate, it seems you have much more winter than we do but earlier summers…. unusual. What a perfectly wonderful day! -except for all the strawberry slicing.  How many bags of frozen berries does 14 pounds yield? Not as much after the strawberry shortcake, I suppose but what a great way to get your daily fruit!  Is’nt your pool still cold?  It gets down to the fifties at night here still.

  • Mmmmm… I think strawberries taste like summer too! I like how you called the day a “strawberry day”; I might have to steal that from you. The grocery store has the strawberry display right up front so I see the sale sign when I first walk in the door. They are smart and we eat a lot of strawberries.

  • Ohhh I’m jealous that you live nearby strawberry farm.. I love them.. YUMMY!!  The last time I had strawberries.. They weren’t that sweet as I had hoped..  Maybe you can send me some of it from wherever you are.. lol

  • I note that you are writing math curriculum…..so, logical person that I am, I deduce you are a math person. Wow. Math is the bane of our school life…..I will try not to feel envious!

  • that was beautiful! now I have a terrible strawberry-craving!

  • Ah, a math AND English person! Wow. I’m impressed….I’m solely English…my favorite part of homeschooling is a high school lit class I teach. I think in another life I would have liked to have taught lit on the college level. :)

  • we had soo much fun swimming and hanging out with you guys! too bad we couldnt stay longer for the cookout…..

  • strawberries, I want strawberry shortcake…  YUM.  There is just something too wonderful about them.  Mamaglop and I must be in about the same parallel.  We are just finishing asparagus, and I had my first taste of fresh strawberries today–brought by someone from south of here.  They were so delicious!  Can’t wait!

  • Hi, Mrs. Sellers. You probably noticed a large quantity of strawberries were gone on Saturday evening… we girls had quite a feast after swimming! haha They were delicious.

  • That was a berry nice entry.

  • My dad has his own strawberry patch, and I’m looking foward to picking in a few weeks!  The berries I’ve been getting from the store are lacking in flavor!

  • LOL, I scored as a Mr. Darcy! LOL.
