A Movie and a Play
This is one LONG entry! I had originally planned to chronicle all of my weekend into one entry, but when I saw the length of this post after only two of my many topics, I decided to save the rest of the weekend for tomorrow’s post. There are lots of pictures and a movie review!
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Yo, ho, ho, ho, we went to a movie premiere! The Sellers clan and a herd of others headed out Thursday night for the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. Since one should always dress up for a special evening, the children did.
Gockle420–Avast Ye Maties!Libby K–Arrrgh! Hoist the main sail!
The_Art_of_Wit–The Sparrow has nothing on him!NatetheHunter–I do a dead-on Jack Sparrow, but I’d rather dress like Will
WilliamFan1 and GhostFroggy_123–Piratey ThingsOne thing I liked about the movie was the fact that the apostrophe was in the correct place in the title. At least there was something to like. The rest of the movie was beloved by the teenage males in the crowd and not-so-enjoyed by the rest of us. Why? I shall explain as best as I am able without giving away much of the plot.
Violence–This movie had a lot of it. Yes, they are pirates. They do piratey things like kill people. But, it was much more graphic (not in an R rated movie way, but just not the way it was in 1 and 2). For example, a woman is shot in the head and falls back into the arms of another woman. We get to see the bullet wound. In that same scene, a woman is lying on the ground. Someone walks up and shoots her. Many people are stabbed, and the sword coming out the other side of the body is shown. In one instance, the sword is pulled out and blood is wiped from it.
Sex–Elizabeth wears some short things in a scene or two. That lady with the black teeth is sort of scantily-clad in one scene. There are a few things which are licked, which to me is always sensual, even if it is just to taste something. The true “big daddy” happens at the end. Some male wants his boot, and some female puts her foot up on a rock, showing the boot and a whole lotta leg. Said male with sultry eyes kisses her knee and removes boot.
Plot–You know how the Caribbean is known for its crystal-clear waters? This movie is anything but crystal clear. Many times I was saying, “Huh? I thought so-and-so was a bad guy/good guy/etc.” After the movie ended, I discovered I was far from alone in my muddled thoughts. There is a mystical subplot about Calypso, goddess of the sea, and whether or not she should be released from human form. The worst bit for me–Keira Knightly had blonde hair in the movie. Why? This bothered me the entire film.
I would not recommend this film for the younger crowd. My eleven year old son didn’t really like it. My fourteens and fifteen year olds loved it.
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Saturday was the play! I went to the dress rehearsal on Friday and filmed it and attended both of the performances on Saturday. Wow. Wow. Wow. An insane amount of kudos to Amy Hobbs and the whole cast and crew! One did not get the feeling that a bunch of high school students were standing on stage. It was so professionally done. My mom, stepdad, grandma, and great-aunt who attended the evening performance knew nothing of Pride and Prejudice. They had not read the book or seen any version of the movie. (And to think that is where I grew up…) During intermission, my great-aunt said, “I bet he winds up with the tall one. She said ‘never,’ and when someone says ‘never’ it usually means that they will be together.” What fun!
Just so I don’t have to type it over and over, those who have Xangas–

“I wish I could see some happiness for both of us.”
“Will you do me the great honor of becoming my wife?”

You should have taught a candid photography class. Great pictures, Mrs. Sellers – it looks like fun times were had by all!
We just got back from watching this movie. I am like you.. I thought there was way too much violence and sex stuff. I had to have my kids turn their heads several times. And then I STILL have NO clue what REALLY happened in that movie. My daughter tried to explain it to me, but my head started to hurt and I told her to pick back up tomorrow. =) .. I liked the first 2 movies much better. There’s going to be a 4th one, isn’t there? =)
Thanks for all the photos and descriptions, Mary. I can’t believe how much the scenery changed in a week’s time…or even in a couple of hours.
The picture of you and Nate is wonderful. He makes a very handsome Mr. Darcy.
Great post!!! I’ve never had any desire to see the Pirates Movie and I sure don’t now! The pictures of the play are fantastic, have a wonderful day!
Your pictures are fantastic. And I’m with heavenbound_girl — I’m not big on the Pirates movies and now I know to not allow my littles to go — the boys really want to see some pirates stuff and they see the ads, so they think it’s a good idea.
As for your next report, I’m getting exhausted just reading a summary. I can’t imagine how you feel.
Sounds like you’ve had a busy weekend already! Can’t imagine anymore! lol
The set looks great from P&P! (That coming from a stage/set design person from former co-op days)
My oldest daughter went to POTC 2 dressed as pirates. They didn’t like that one much so they don’t have any interest in #3.
Wow! Fantastic photos! I would have loved to see the play!
I’m looking forward to seeing you soon!
That is a wonderful photo of you and Natethehunter. All of the photos, in fact, are fantastic. (Were you using your excellent digital camera to take some of those?) I was thrilled to see the play over the weekend, and truly impressed with how well the teens did with the whole production.
Now I can’t wait for *more* about your Memorial Day weekend! Must have been busy!!
There are many opinions of Pirates 3! Personally, I thought it was pretty good, not GREAT, but good.
Great pictures by the way! That was a great play, everyone did so well!
The play was so impressive!!! Everyone did so well with their parts!! I especially loved all the costumes – did people make their own?
I’m disappointed to hear about Potc3. I had hoped it’d be better than the second one, but it looks like their just going steadily downhill with each new movie. I really loved the first one – it had a solid plot and good character development. Why did they have to change everything? And Tia Dalma drives me insane. She’s just a pointless witchy voodoo character that wears nasty clothing and has nasty teeth.
*sigh* Now I’m having second thoughts about going out to see it…
Oh, those pictures are wonderful! I don’t think I have some of those…
Merry
The play looked excellent! I wish I could have been there!
Awesome, I’m so excited that the theater is now open; sad I don’t live there anymore, but excited for you. Nate looks just like Darcy and AB is the perfect Elizabeth Bennet, it looks like a fun time. Sorry we missed it!!!
Great Pictures, Mary!!! I really enjoyed the play! See you soon!
Your play looks professional! The costumes, props and makeup…………..what great pictures!
I was not interested in seeing the pirate movie but my 14 year old daughter was. She has seen the previous 2 and was really anticipating this movie. She came home disappointed. But, she is now waiting for the 4th. Is there going to be a 4th?
I made it home! And I made it to the bottom of this post! And I look forward to your next blog. AND… thanks so much for having me, I enjoyed my stay most immensely!
Daniel
Great pictures! And the play….I am in amazement at your talent. I would have LOVED to have been there.
I haven’t seen Pirates. I’m not much of a fan of that type of movie I guess.
I love all the costumes! It brings back my own memories of working back stage during HS theater.
I’m glad the play went well.
I’ve heard from various other sources that Pirates 3 is not nearly as good as 1 and 2. I’ll probably watch it when it comes out on DVD, but just because I’m a person who needs closure.
Looking forward to the next installment!
What fun pictures! Thanks for posting them!
It sounds like a wonderful production!
The pirates pictures were quite fun, too, even if the movie wasn’t quite.
What on earth was I doing with my face and my hands in that pic???;p
Wow, Mrs. Sellers, I didn’t realize how short you were.
Loveliful pics! The costumes are so fun!! I think Libby’s boots are hilarious!
That was a fun post.
Looks great. Wish I could have been there.
WOW!! It looks like pirates and P&P was lots of fun!! I wish we could have post-poned all of our plans for a week. Do you know how we can get a hold of a video of P&P? I’d love to watch it!
I saw Pirates 3 with my cousins and didn’t really like it. There were some ok parts but the whole movie in general kinda blows. I sobbed when they stabbed Will through the heart! haha! but the ending made it all bearable. ttyl
My “little” brother Daniel is about six foot four, so I know what it’s like to look UP.
Fantastic weekend!! I am SO glad to hear your review of Pirates….not that we’ve ever had the inclination and burst at the seams to see the movie(s). But, in case the hankerin’ were to hit us, I’d know better than taking my little guys!
Your play looks like it very professionally done! I’m sure you were very, very proud of your family.
Can’t wait to hear what else you’ve managed to fit into your weekend!!!

Thanks, that would be great!

wow- those are really great pics– I would love you to email them to me if you have time. Darcy was fantastic as usual! We also had a wonderful time at your house and thanks again.
