Brain-Be-Gone
Today I was buying weed killer at Lowe’s. After loading my cart with weapons of dandelion destruction, I decided I wanted to go outside to look at the tomato plants. I wasn’t sure if I was allowed to take my unpurchased chemicals outside. I noticed a man coming toward me purposefully pushing a big cart. “Excuse me,” I said, gesturing to my Weed-Be-Gone, “Am I allowed to take this outside to look at the tomatoes?”
“Do you think that I care?” the man replied.
“Well, some Lowe’s worker needs a nap!” I thought. It was only when I was checking out that I noticed all the Lowe’s workers wear bright red vests with name badges, not tailored polo shirts with embroidery like the man was wearing. Duh, I asked a customer! No wonder he was so peevish!
Other than feeling like a total dork at a hardware store, the rest of life has been going well. This weekend, I was one of the chaperones at Talents for Christ, a teen competition in all sorts of categories. Hunter placed second in male voice and public speaking. Ghosty took first in female voice and 2-D art, and Kleinekatze took second in strings for her beautiful harp playing. Countrygirlatheart took second in 2-D art, and Wit’s lemon pound cake was delicious, even if it failed to beat out the chocolate cheesecake.
Life is slowing down a great deal now. All we have are baseball games and practices (only one boy playing this season and two umpiring!) and Pride and Prejudice practices. (And school and voice and music lessons, but those are all-school-year things and don’t really count, right?)
Does life slow down for you in May, or does it get a lot busier? Or, are you too busy embarrassing yourself in stores to even notice?

haha, that guy sounds grumpy. May is a transition month for me, from living at college to going home for the summer. It can be a hard transition sometimes.
Mostly when I have less freedom than I’m used to.
Mary!
So did you buy any tomato plants? I have one growing. It’s so hard to grow anything here. So…I planted one plant in a planter and it’s thriving, Praise God.
God bless you.
Cynthia
Geez he can take a polite pill for once.. He could have said oh best to ask someone who works there.. So you will take the hint..
For me I’m not sure if I get more busy or less busy as this year is my first time that my kid are in a ballgame.. I notice I get bit busy.. But no different than what I usually do take off to vacation to somewhere.. Now I’m homebound this year..
Thanks for the offering to talk to me about that situation.. I appreciated it.. Maybe at another time when I’m ready to really talk about Him.. I’ll come find you.. Right now I’m not so sure..
You know, even though he wasn’t an employee, he didn’t need to be rude. It would have taken him the same amount of enery to just say, “I don’t know”; if fact less energy – he could have saved 2 syllables!
We are beginning to slow down but it takes a lot of time to close up for summer! At school we cover less new stuff, but must prepare finals. My daughter’s 4H show season was over last month and that was a relief.
Our weather this weekend was beautiful and now the weather man says rain for the rest of the week. Good for the flowers. (you dandelion killer! —- hahahahah)
That’s the sort of thing I would have done–ask a customer. I hate talking to anyone in stores, unless the employees stand out like a sore thumb, for fear of doing exactly what you did.
Toads can live a long time, upwards of five years and more I think. I googled them a while back, whilst wondering how my toad managed it that long already. Granted, with the state of our basement, there must be plenty to eat down there. I’m rather glad he is keeping the insect population down.
Have a good day!
Look at it this way, you’ll probably never see that guy again, and even if you did, he won’t remember you.
Are you doing the play Pride & Prejudice? Sounds like fun!
I think May is a transition month for most homeschoolers. Unfortunately, I’m transitioning out of somethings & into others! Actually, my calendar is getting fuller & fuller, and not just because of the time of the year, but because my kids are finding activities to get involved in.
I wish you were here, so I could pick your brain on lawn/garden care. Our grass is a mess, but we managed to make our plants in front look decent and added some mulch. I suspect this May will be busier for me with the baby coming…not in labor yet btw. It’s really making me mad!
Oh no! I have asked a non-employee a question before and felt so embarrassed too. So you are not alone
Thanks for your comment. I had to laugh at the peeling veggie comment
Slow down? hah! <G> Classes will be winding down but wedding to-do list won’t. I’m in the middle of invitations at the moment. It’s nice to take a break and type for a change
Tomorrow is the Jeopardy audition. Please pray if you think of it!
Hugs,
Renee
May is a winding down time for us. Our school ends just before Memorial Day, and many subjects are finished in April or a bit later.
One time I was in Target and nearly went out the front doors with stuff in my cart that had not been purchased. The children were young, and I wanted one of those huge carts with seats attached. There weren’t any inside, and I’d started to shop anyway. I realized I really needed the seats for the two little ones, and remembered there was one in the parking lot, and just headed for the door. Thankfully I stopped myself before handcuffs were necessary. That really shook me up; all I could think of is how close I might have come to being arrested for shoplifting!
Don’t worry, I’ve had actual Lowe’s workers be less than happy to help me. Home Depot, here I come.
As for life slowing down, well, we took our piano teacher to be out to lunch after church yesterday and we are starting lessons next month. She asked if we stop school in the summer and I told her no and one reason is because they lose too much stuff. It just falls right out of their heads.
She said she does not stop piano lessons for the same reason.
Oh, and when I was twelve, someone, in a clothing store, asked me for help, thinking I worked there. At least you didn’t ask a pre-teen thinking they worked there.
Ah, yes. Things will start slowing down for us (at least for a little while!) after next week. I’m very much looking forward to it!
I don’t work at Lowes but I think it is fine to take the weed killer outside.
Life slow down in May? What’s that? I’m too busy to keep track of what month it is…
. As for stores, rather than risk said embarrassment, I have a tendency to wander befuddled through the aisles until I’m to desperate to care about the embarrassment.
What a rude response! Everybody makes that mistake at times. I make worse ones than that.
Talk about brain-be-gone, I didn’t get your title until the third time I read your post! Need sleep, must have sleep!
I am glad to hear that I am not the only one that mistakes customers for employees. The worst though is when the person isn’t English speaking…that’s REALLY embarrassing!
I am excited! I sponser a child through Compassion International. A 4 year old boy in Nicaragua. He sent me a letter today. Well, he dictated to a translator. He sent a drawing he’d done with some stickers on it!
I am allowed to send only flat, paper things to him. I have sent him a sticker page of Curious George and pages out of coloring books. At Christmas, I sent some Nativity scene stickers. I am open to ideas of things to send. ???????
i’m just really good at embarrassing myself period. lol
Okay, I have not read through all of your comments so mine might be repetitive, but YOU are not the one who embarrassed yourself in the store. It was that man. A simple, “I don’t work here,” would suffice.
May is just like any other month really… I always manage to be busy with something or other! Mostly it just means more outdoor activities with friends.
I know I’ve had my fair share of embarrassing moments in stores… I just tend to block them from my memory!
