Sorrow
When the victims of the shootings at Virginia Tech came out, I read the list thinking, “Oh, don’t let any of my former students be on that list.” None were. Today I got this email from a fellow AP teacher about Zach Weber, a wonderful student from my first year of teaching:
“Zachary went into the Air Force
right after graduation from high school, and had been stationed in
Italy for almost 2 years now. He was
due to come home in just 2 days for a brief furlough before changing his
assignment (I can’t remember if he was set to head to Iraq, but that
is possible). He had a few days off before heading home, and had gone with a
good Air Force friend to do some hiking in the Italian Alps, and in a freak
accident he lost his footing and plunged to his death down a very steep and deep
ravine. The family just got word of this horrible news yesterday afternoon at
5:30pm, when 2 Air Force officers showed up at their door.”
Oh, how my heart aches for this family! They have a married daughter and a younger daughter at home. They are faithful, close-knit, homeschooling family.
If you could remember the Weber family in your prayers, please do. If you knew Zach and want to send a card or email to his family, let me know and I can get you their addresses.

that is so sad. i am really sorry.
God bless you Mary!
I’m very sorry to hear that. I’ll be praying.
Such a sad thing to have happened. So close to coming home. But now he really IS home.
I didn’t know you knew Zach! Our families have been friends since before I can remember. I didn’t know Zach all that well, since he was so much older than me, but my parents did, and I know the rest of the family well. Thanks for posting something. What a homecoming Sadie and I had….
That is such a difficult thing. I will be praying for that family! I wonder, though, what were his last thoughts? Maybe, “I’m coming home, Jesus!”……. ?
That is unbelievable. It teaches me to savor every day with my family members as none of us know when they/I will be taken!
So sorry to hear this. I’ll be remembering the family.
I’m so glad the play went well. Now you’ll have more time to work on your book, right? Hope you find your routine again soon.
The feet are much much better. I wore sandals and stockings yesterday. I couldn’t have done that last week.
Blessings, Mary.
That is sooo sad! I’ll Def be praying for them
Sorry to hear this. Also want to add that you are right, David just turned 16.
So sorry about the loss of this young man. Will pray for his family.
Glad your play was a success.
I am very sorry. My old boss lost his brother from a fall off a cliff, and my niece fell on the Alps three years ago and had to be airlifted out. When I think what might have happened. At least they know there will be a reunion.
