  • Happy Birthday, Wyatt Earp!

Well, well. It’s Wyatt Earp’s birthday again, or rather, it would be if he hadn’t died in 1929.  Who is Wyatt Earp? Remember all those western movies? Well, Earp was the real deal:  prospector, silver miner, gambler, railroad worker, lawman, Wells Fargo agent, stagecoach driver, buffalo hunter, and McDonald’s fry cook. (Okay, one of those isn’t for real. Can you figure out which one? Huh?)

Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp (a name which is ridiculously fun to say and sounds very much like something one should take antibiotics to cure) was born on March 19, 1848. He eventually moved to Dodge City (“get outta Dodge”), and the famous shootout at the OK Corral happened in Tombstone, AZ.  It was between the infamous Clanton gang (Hilary and Bill?) and the Earp brothers. So, shoot a gun into the air and “Yee-haw!”  It’s also an excellent reason to eat the dessert of your choice. I know he’d have wanted it that way.

If God brings me to mind, could you pray for TGD and me as we work on
the Youth Retreat for this weekend? Pretty please? We have tonight and tomorrow to work on it, and
the rest of the week is all taken with other things (as was last week).
We are planning to have three sessions on God’s will, since I’m such an expert on what God’s will is! (Har har) Actually, God has told us much of His will. We just get sidetracked by what he hasn’t told us.

It’s snowing again! What’s up with that?  Frost and ice and miserable roads plague me still.

If you didn’t see it, aj1965 wrote an amazing poem just for me! It’s in the second page of comments two posts ago. I’m tickled to death. (And, I want a cookie.)

Speaking of cookies and my overwhelming desire for one (ten), would you share your best tips and tricks for losing a pound or two (or five)?  What foods fill you up or are super yummy? What tricks do you use? How do you  motivate yourself?

  • It’s snowing here too, and the forecast for tomorrow isn’t great. I hope the roads aren’t bad, as we have Mass. and NY to drive across.

I could use advice on how to lose a pound or two also. Only tricks I know are to take smaller portions at meals and walk regularly–and not snack too much.

Thanks so much for your supportive comment today. Yours and Nancy’s made my day!
    Blessings,
    Karen

  • Drink lots of water and eat slowly.  I have heard that your body doesn’t tell your brain that your stomach is full until 20 minutes after you are done eating.  We’ve been eating more whole grain pasta, better for you and still tastes good.  I try to walk or ride the stationary bike each evening–headphones & portable dvd player makes it go by fast!  By the way, my David was Wyatt Earp at our western sweetheart banquet at our church…we all had real western people names.  You guys will do great at the youth retreat!  I have so many fond and humorous memories of the EBC Jr. High youth!  : )  Thile

  • Hoping all goes well at the youth retreat. Weight loss tips? I sure do need them! Motivation – you mean that fleeting thing I have such a hard time keeping a grip on? (Sigh.) At least, I’m in a good position to learn.

  • Yeah, I wish you could all come down to help out, but I’d keep you up most of the night as I pace around the house.  Just pray for me.  If possible, stick me on the prayer chain at Faith.  Thanks!

  • I’ve found that I can keep a dashing figure without even working out simply by having no good (or easily made/reheated) food in the fridge. When it’s all infected with onions/mushrooms/tomatoes/eggplant or when it’s fish I’m easily able to blithely ignore meals! However, when you’ve got a decent serving of, say, thai chicken with peanut sauce in the fridge… Things are much different.

However, you’re in something of a predicament. If you start making bad food then the citizens will revolt.

  • Stephen’s comment made me laugh. My tip is a combo pilates/dance/running workout . . . I just need some winter running clothes. Just when I thought I could actually wear my spring-ish running clothes the weather turned on me again. My Mom’s favorite tip is only have raw fruit each morning until 12:00 — she’s had more than one person bow down at her feet after trying it! I personally do it every morning . . . but, then again, I’m not a huge breakfast person and never have been.

How is Mere Christianity? Laura has read it and highly recommended it . . . I’d love you know your thoughts.

    Praying for you!

  • Well, we’ve been enjoying some warm weather.  This past weekend it was in the 80′s.  I loved it!  I’m now in the process of losing weight, my goal is 10-15 lbs.  What motivates is that either I lose the weight or will have to buy bigger clothes.  It’s coming off slowly which is good, that increases the chances of it staying off.  I’m actually doing a lifestyle change, since I also have borderline high cholesterol.  For breakfast I eat a heart healthy cereal.  Then I take fruit, yogurt and a heart healthy bar along with me to work everyday to keep me full until lunch.  Lunch is small, like a sandwich and milk.  Dinners are normal, however I eat very slowly now.  I eat whatever I want for that meal, but I’ve noticed I stop eating sonner since I’ve slowed down.  I also exercise about 4 times a week.  I either walk, jog or use the eliptical trainer.  I also make a fruit smoothie and put 3 different fruits in there, banana, strawberry and blueberries.  I recently found out that blueberries are antioxidants and have MANY health benefits.  If you have any questions let me know.  Have a blessed day.

  • I try to drink a cup of tea or coffee when I can’t fight a craving.  Eat lots of whole grains that will fill you longer.  Don’t eat cookies–I know those are your weekness.

  • I used to buy super expensive running shoes, and my cheap and thrifty self would feel badly enough about the investment that I’d feel like I at least needed to use them to run.  Last time I tried that trick, though, my lazy self took over, and the shoes were just a crazy waste of money.  Oh well.  I’ve also found that keeping an honest food journal really discourages me from eating a lot of junk or unnecessary snacks…but keeping up with that sometimes requires some serious motivation too!

Sorry about the snow!  Ours looks to be mostly melted now.

  • I’ll be praying for this weekend!    Don’t be afraid to shock them a little if necessary…  :)

Life is short and eternity is long.

  • Fun post!

    Drink tons of water.

Mere Christianity is one of my all time favorite books!

  • RYC:  Not only am I sick, but I seem to be getting worse!  What’s up with that?

  • Here’s a great diet tip….Have your daughter become a vegetarian!!!!

  • I would almost agree with Steve, except it wouldn’t be chicken, much rather leftover subs or pizza.

  • Weight loss, hmmm, best tip is don’t let yourself become hungry you are more likely to bing eat if you do.  Also don’t completely deny yourself treats or you may end up eating a lot more than just one or two.

I may take you up on the evals. in S.C.  Still searching here.  Besides you do have that nice big bookstore over there and, well, you know what kind I have here. :)

    Like the Wyatt Earp info.

  • Thanks for leaving your tantalizing supper menu.  I am so jealous!

  • Earp!  Oops, pardon me!  Weight loss.  Oi.  How can one do that sort of thing with cookies in the world?  I find that weight loss is its own motivator.  Although Progresso’s soups are good and low fat — even the low fat variety!  As for filling up me self.  I think ten cookies oughta do the trick.

  • “I’m sorry, Ma’am, but, you have the dreaded Wyatt-Berry-Stapp-Earp virus…… you’ll have to take these ‘horse’ pills and let it ‘run it’s course’!” (har-dee-har-har!!)

I’m so happy you like the poem I wrote you!  If I’d had more time, it would have been longer, but, as you know, I was getting ready for my trip….. which I’ll be blogging about soon, I hope.

I’ll make sure to pray for your youth retreat.  How BRAVE you both are!!!!

I’m shocked that you all are still getting snow and ice! I’m so thankful we’re pretty well done with that stuff! I thought we always were behind you in the seasons…… guess not this year?

As far as weight loss, I’m much more of an expert on how to gain it, than lose it!! ;)   I am trying to stay away from sugared drinks, eat more vegetables, and increase the exercise factor in my life. The exercise seems to be helping….. I think!

  • Well, Mary, if I were your size I’d be so happy, I’d be eating cookies.

Has Nate started looking at colleges yet?

  • I’ve recently reflected upon what a weird last name Earp is. It sounds like a belch. I wonder if I’ll marry somebody with that last name. Brittany Earp. . . ummm. . . hmm. I think Wyatt is the one and only name that sounds halfway decent with that last name, but now that I know his middle names it sounds ridiculous, lol.

  • RYC  I’m in the Air Force.  I’ve been in for 3 years.  Before that I was in the Navy for 6 and a half years.

  • I found the poem.  That is too cute–you have been honored!

Also love the info about Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp  (love that name!)

  • Funny post!  I will remember you in prayer, and I did see that poem.  I thought it was very good.  She must have personal face to face knowlege of you.  The sad truth about dieting is that the yummy food and the low calorie fill you up food are rarely the same food.  I’ve just been reading “Mastering Leptin”  It goes against popular diet wisdom and says you should eat about 400- 500 calories per meal and space your three meals (no snacks) at least five hours apart in order to utilize the leptin/insulin cycle to start fat burning.  And don’t eat anything for the three hours before bedtime.  And No Cookies!  I’m trying it sort of.  I figure it is good practice for me to limit thinking about food to three times a day.
