The Leg Remains Unbroken
I’m home! What a fabulous time LibbyK and I had!
But, let me start at the beginning… I don’t know if you heard about the big snow storm that hit PA on Friday–12 inches over most of Route 80. Guess who drove right down Route 80 for 3.5 hours or so? Yup. Praise God that He keeps even the stupid safe on the roads. We arrived at my friend Valerie’s house and then left again to take the Hunter to avaricewrex’s house for a youth retreat overnight.
Saturday dawned sunny. Big Boulder, the place where we were to ski, had 18 inches of snow on Friday. Valerie and her oldest daughter(who is just a few months younger than LibbyK), and I headed to the ski rental place and got all of our things. Then, we headed for the slopes. Valerie’s friend from church, Bill, is a member of the ski patrol. He gave us complimentary lift tickets and skied with us for four or five hours before he left for the day, giving us pointers and tips, basically teaching us how to ski better. The last time I skied was in 1988, and even though I remembered how to do it, I never had any instruction, so his tips were quite helpful.
We stuck mostly to the bunny slopes and intermediate ones. I only fell three times. Once was getting off the lift when Lib skied into me. (I whacked my head on the side of the lift for that one.) The other two times were when I went down Bunny’s Elbow, a bumpy intermediate course. I went rather quickly and planted my face in the snow twice. It was cold, really cold, in case you were wondering!
By 9:30 p.m. I was well-chilled, so I sat in the lodge while the girls and Valerie made three final runs down the hill. Then, we headed back to her house. Skiing from 1:30 to 9:30 with a few breaks for snacks and warming up is a lot of ski time!
My original plan had been to head home around 7:00 Saturday night, but TGD and others were so gracious that we wound up sleeping over again Saturday night. It was wise, as the snow had returned; it was 19 degrees, icy, and dark; and I was rather worn out.
But, I’m home now, still exhausted and worn out. (My neck is rather sore–skiing or a strange bed for two nights?)
Perhaps I’ll have a picture or two in a few days. My friend has the pictures on her camera.
How was your weekend? Did you get any of the snowstorm?

I LOVE to ski, I am soooooo jealous! Glad you had fun!
No snow this weekend it is TX after all, but it did drop down to 65…does that count?
Sounds like you had fun! I’ve never been skiing . . . but I think that will soon change considering where I’ll be going to school!
Yes, we drove west in bad snow but it ended around Akron,OH. Glad to hear you had fun skiing– now will you join our homeschool ski club next year? It is the same discounted price for Moms too!!
I was going to ask if you had driven 3.5 hours west or east? But maybe flutemom’s post is a clue that you drove west. Here in Missouri, we did see on the weather channel that PA was hit with snow. N & A are driving home tonight–figure it’s probably okay by tonight. I’ve been skiing only once…and that was back in about 1977. I’d need a *lot* of tips, I’m sure.
Sounds like a wonderful time!
sounds like you had a fun time (well, except for driving through that snow storm!) i have never been skiing.
If a snowstorm had hit the Hinterlands it would have made national news. There are some good things about living in a subtropical climate.
Though, I do believe, where we moved to is about at the very tip of what can still be called subtropical!
Glad all got home safely. I have skiied once in my life. It was chaproning a ski trip when my dh was stationed in Germany. They don’t mark their hills well. Needless to say, we didn’t go down the easy run! I slid down one hill on my backside because I knew I would kill myself trying it standing up! That did get some looks from the locals and they knew immediately I was not German. Oh the memories…..
Glad you had such a great time–in spite of the snow. The folks here said they got more snow this weekend (in RI) than they’ve had all winter. Did we bring it?
I don’t think I could handle skiing. The thought of being that cold for fun just isn’t worth it to me.
Blessings,
Karen
I know where Big Boulder is! I’ve never skiied, but I think I’d enjoy the lodge with a cup of hot cocoa!
Wow! You have one exciting life! I’ve never been skiing, but love the idea of sitting in a lodge before a roaring fire sipping a large mug of hot chocolate. We would probably have to travel out of state to find enough snow for skiing. We didn’t get even a flake this year. Hope your head feels better!
I can just feel your soreness for you! I have not skiied in a long time and it would probably be the death of me! Glad your all safe and had a good time!
We got snow here in Michigan last night. I wish I could go skiing tonight!
That’s ALL?? Your neck is sore??? I had a friend who tried skiing for the first time in her forties and said she felt like she’d been tumbled in a dryer for a day. Even my kids get sore that first time. If this gets to be a habit, you should invest in a ski helmet. At last it’s possible to be both cool and safe on the slopes.
Sounds fun! And I agree that I can’t imagine you’re not sore anywhere else. The outside of my thighs were SO sore when I went–from turning, maybe?
I’ve never been skiing and I’m not so sure I want to go. My kids on the other hand want to try everything under the sun. Yikes! I have my fare share of dare devils here in this house! I’m glad you had a nice time. It sounds like a really nice ending to Winter. LOL Not that winter weather will automatically be ending instantly when we cross over to Spring. LOL
RYC: The dry erase board workout today was genetics. LOL Dominant and recessive genes, X’s & Y’s, B’s & b’s. LOL Then they wanted to know why they were far sited and both Mom and Dad were near sited. My head started spinning with that one. LOL
We just received about another 3 inches of the white stuff today. I need to occupy my time by making plans for the gardens. LOL
Hey were were on Rt. 80 too!
Nope, it’s not just a rumor, Keri and I have planned on getting our ears done for a while but just haven’t done it. You and Mr. Sellers are speaking at the retreat this year, right? I’m so glad, you guys are very entertaining!
Some people have all the luck. You go skiing for the first time and get a sore neck; I go skiing for years and break both wrists…
*sigh*
beginners luck. ;D
I don’t like the cold or the wet of snow, and I think I’d probably kill myself if I tried to ski. I like my books and warm apartment. I’m glad you enjoyed yourself though!
Glad you didn’t break anything! We didn’t get as much snow as they said we might, but it was still a storm. I was told on Friday night, before it had done anything yet, that I wouldn’t be working on Saturday morning because of the coming storm. It was nice not to have to go anywhere on Saturday.
Okay, my old pal! I for one remember you being a great and graceful skier. You even melted the snow in Vermont a time or two with your snow plowing and runt eating. I hope that you had a great time with Libby. I have to tell you that I look forward to reading your blogs each time they pop up. It’s like a little window into your world. Keep it them coming.
I’ve never commented on a blog site….I hope that I’m doing this right….here it goes!
Hugs, Michelle
Sounds like you had a great time! So glad you didn’t break a let or anything, but, it sounds like that head-smack could have made your neck sore!
Welcome back!
Glad you returned hope without any broken bones or sprains! I’ve only skied once and that was cross-country. It was pretty fun. I was in my earlier 40′s and I remember not being able to turn over in bed very easy that night and I was sore the next day. Never tried it since. From the looks of it (and my coordination) I think I would stick with cross country rather than down-hill. No snow down here on the Island.
