Taxes, Taxes, Beautiful Taxes! Forgive Me a Cruel Chuckle…
Kudos to anyone who can identify the source of my title! (It’s from a movie which used to be the Hunter’s very favorite.)
I do not agree with the sentiment expressed in the title, however. There was nothing beautiful about the bottom lines after finishing an evening of TurboTaxing federal, state, and local income tax. All my Saxon writing and TGD’s writing and consulting were untaxed, but, never fear. They are now!
On a happier note, tomorrow is another morning ladies’ prayer meeting at church. Afterward, I just might get to go out to breakfast with a friend. And then, it’s off to the library for a day of writing Veritas! Yeah! I have all the revisions done for the part I wrote last time, so I’m ready to press on to new chapters. TGD and the boys plan to spend the afternoon and evening watching wrestling on TV. The girls will find lots of things to do, I’m sure. LibbyK always has good ideas for this and that.
How many of you do your own taxes? Do you get a refund?

Ah, taxes. That is one advantage of being only fifteen.
Your post reminds me, however, of something my dad told me. Its been so long since the last time I saw the movie that I can’t quote exactly, but apparently, some nine years ago or so, I was watching Top Gun with my dad. There is somewhere in the film a line that says something along the lines of “You don’t own that plane, the taxpayers do”. Obviously, I thought the idea of owning an F-14 was very cool, and so I turned to my dad and said something like, “I want to be a taxpayer when I grow up.”
Naturally there is no fear of my aspirations being disappointed.
i do all my own taxes.
I have never done my taxes… ever. My Dad did them for me when I was in high school and college…. my hubs after we got married. I suppose if anything ever happens to them I will call H&R Block, cause I wouldn’t know the first thing to do.
I’m learning stick (oh joy!)
That was Kat. >^,,^<
Robin Hood? With the animated fox?
Probably, but don’t feel bad. You’re too irreverantly witty for Dallas Theological.
That’s the obvious response, of course, but it doesn’t seem to me to actually answer much. We’re still left with only a vague idea of what it means to be “following” said Messiah.
We don’t do our taxes–something about being a minister seems to trigger red flags, so safer to have a CPA do it.
I’m going away for a week, and my project is on a stand, so you will be way ahead when I get back if you get anything done next week. I did spend a couple of hours on it this week.
I just got a phone call from my SIL in Bangladesh, and it is exceedingly late. So I’m off to bed. Forgot if there was anything else I wanted to say because the phone rang when I was typing this.
We’ve been doing our own taxes for years. Sometimes we get a refund, sometimes not. I hate the NOTS.
God bless you.
Cynthia
I’ve always done our own taxes; I used to help my Marines do theirs. It can be complicted some years, but not usually.
I do my own taxes every year. Turbo Tax is great…I swear by it. I hope your outcome wasn’t too painful! Blessings…Susan
I actually watched Facing the Giants yesterday and cried all the way through it. Such a beautiful movie, I’d recommend it to anyone. I am military so I get my taxes done on base. We always get a refund. I hope you have a blessed weekend, I was just passing through.
My wonderful hubby always does the taxes…and it seems that we always get a federal refund, but owe something to the state. It also seems that there might not be such a thing as local taxes (at least not for non-property owners) here in New Jersey…but we’re still looking into that.
I did our taxes until my husband went into business for himeself. Now he does them. Because he’s in business for himself, that means we always have to pay self-employment taxes no matter how much we might get the federal taxes down through deductions by having several children and tax credits for college. It can be painful; this is the second year in a row that we’ve lost children as deductions…and one that turned 17 so that we lost the child tax credit.
We do our taxes and we finished them in February. Yay! Thanks for the encouragement! I am pulling out some art stuff tonight and revamping our afternoons – great advice!
I’ve always done my own taxes, even before getting married. Even though my husband does all the regular bills, I have always done the taxes. We have always gotten a refund, no matter how hard we try to adjust our exemptions. Tax year for 2007 will be our last year with 4 children for the tax credit; then every two years we lose a credit, right about the time that we should have a new child in college every two years. I use turbo tax for IRS now–used them for the first time last year and loved it. Still do the states by hand. We live in one state and dh works in another, so I have to file two sets of state taxes. We get a refund from the one where he works, which partially pays what we owe to our home state.
We’ve gone to a tax service for some years now. This year’s refund was smaller than usual, but that’s okay.
RYC: No, I never worked in a church nursery when I was a teenager. I didn’t get saved until I was in my mid-twenties.
i ALWAYS get refunds on those darned taxes. go me! always over-paying.
We do our taxes with Turbotax and, like you, feel like we are doing Russian Roulette every year with our self-employment in music- some years we get a refund, others we pay. We keep watching that little number on the upper left keep changing on Turbotax with each step. As each kid turns 17 it really makes a difference, too. Per your post on my blog– we are really not getting 2 weeks off- the trip counted as school for Kim as it was educational, and the other kids all were in school so it was I who got the biggest benefit! It was more or less a “working” trip to FL. Still, a nice change from our usual. And yes, I feel about 25! We need to talk about when the scenery session will be this week.
T’was.
Yes and yes to your questions.
Good morning, I’ll add you to my protected list. And I’ll sub to you if that’s ok. Have a great Sunday!!!
Did you see the piles of books? The tip of the iceberg, I assure you.
We do our own taxes…we’ve always gotten a refund. This year we tried to plan it so we didn’t get one, I would rather be earning interest off my money than let the government do so. However, we still ended up with a refund. I can’t wait until next year when we can claim LB!!!!
I LOVE Robin Hood. it was my Favortie movie when i was little!
I do our own taxes. Since we’re self-employed & usually don’t have enough to send in quarterly payments, we owe them.
I tried turbo tax last year, and something went wrong. After all the time I took to type in all the amounts they asked for, it wouldn’t print out for me or send. It needed some kind of update & I couldn’t figure out how to get it! Bummers. I had to go back & do it all myself. I’ll just keep on doing it that way, I guess. Although with selling the house this year, maybe next time, I will go to an accountant since I don’t know how to figure that in.
I meant to look for Facing Giants at the video store today, is it available at regular video stores or is it a special release like the Billy Graham movies? We rented The Shaggy Dog. So, the line is from Robin Hood? Thanks for the review of that book. I am usually so sure I’ll be disappointed in the “sequels” authored by others, I don’t even try, but if there were a good book from Darcy’s point of view, I’d be interested.
