Facing the Giants
I am feeling much better today, although I’m still hacking and coughing. I am certainly feeling a great deal better than half of the cast of Peach Fuzz, as they have the flu! Since they were all sick in bed, we canceled practice tonight. I made tacos (a treat I rarely make, for some reason), and we all watched Facing the Giants.
I don’t know if you are familiar with this movie or not, but I highly recommend it. It tells the story of a coach with more problems than a man should have: broken car, smelly house, five years of a losing season as a football coach, unable to have children, the football parents want to fire him… Yet, faith and perseverance prevail in this satisfying story.
No, it is not amazing acting. Many of the cast are just regular people who actually played on the football team dramatized in the movie. The woman who played the coach’s wife in the movie was the real-life coach’s wife. Yes, there are lots of trite, clichéd
lines. Yes, you can guess at the ending. But, it is so rare to see people in a movie pray or trust in God. That’s what happens in my life. Why shouldn’t happen in my movies? I’m not one usually to cry at a film, but I found myself wiping away tears three or four times! Also, the football footage was not stylized. I don’t know if it was footage of the team upon whom the movie was based or staged games and shots for the movie. I’ve seen more than my fair share of small-town, high school football, and this footage was just as it should be. It sounded just right. It looked just right. We said, “Oooh!” at the hard hits.
So, if you are looking for a good way to spend the evening with your
older kids (the preschool crowd would more than likely find it rather
dull, unless they like football), I recommend this film.
Thanks to bkroeker and flutemom38 and family for the loan of the DVD. Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to flutemom38!Have any movie plans of your own this weekend?

I wholeheartedly agree with Teacherperson – you should see this film. For those of you who know me and my “football sideline prowess”, you will get a kick out of the “larger” assistant coach – I told the kids that they asked me to play that role but it just did not work out.
Movie plans for me this weekend? No way, there’s a full Saturday’s worth of high school wrestling live on the Pennsylvania Cable Network! The only decision I have to make now is which couch to sit on while enjoying all the state championship action!
I have heard of this before, but I have not thought to watch it. I definately want to watch it now…thanks for the reccomendation!
Definitely a movie to see! RYC: What brand of rice cooker do you have? I just discovered boil-in-bags for rice. The rice comes out good, but I have been interested in getting a rice cooker. Have a great weekend!
I’m glad you are feeling better today! I laughed when you said that you rarely make tacos. I’m the same way…and yet everytime I make them, I always think that I need to make them more as they aren’t so difficult and so tasty! We had them on Tuesday evening. Too fun! Be Blessed and have a great weekend. (My most exciting plan is that I’m attending the wedding of a former student on Sunday. I’m very excited about this couple who have followed God’s plan for their lives and are going to do great things for the kingdom ….together!)
I actually was already planning to watch this movie this weekend. We never made it to the movies when it was still in theatres and now that it’s out on DVD, it’s at the top of my list. Also, later this afternoon will be launching rockets. I just hope they all come back in one piece since my Beloved has spent hours building every one of them.
No movie plans, but I get to spend the WHOLE DAY tomorrow at a Ladies’ Prayer retreat!!! I CAN’T WAIT!!!
I also look forward to watching Facing the Giants…we haven’t seen it yet. I also hope to see “Amazing Grace” and “The Ultimate Gift”.
I liked the movie too and agreed completely with your assessment…
I hope you and the family feel better soon and TGD gets some encouragement…
We have wanted to see this movie but just haven’t gotten around to it. I am hoping that we can go see The Pursuit of Happiness starring Will Smith this weekend. It is at the cheap $3 theatre…and I like cheap. Plus I love movies that are about overcoming. Overcoming anything, disabilities, doubt, finances, they are just so much Jesus to me. Hope, I guess. Maybe I will write a review if we do see it.
My husband and kids saw “Facing the Giants” last Sunday evening at our church. My husband said it was really good. Now I will have to borrow the DVD from my in-laws to watch it.
Hubby and I just went to see “Amazing Grace” in the theater last Friday. (first movie we have been to since “End of the Spear”) That was a wonderfully done movie and it would be a great movie for teens to learn about the slave trade and the abolition of the slave trade.
My father-in-law pointed out an interesting fact that one of the reasons that “Facing the Giants” and “Amazing Grace” have PG ratings is because of their religious content. How very sad.
Glad that you’re feeling a little better!
Movie plans…I don’t think so. I can’t remember the last time that I actually got to watch a whole movie. Oh well.
Mmmm . . . a few friends and I are going to see Amazing Grace this afternoon. It should be fun!
No, it’s not a Psalm 51 sort of day. But it’s been a heart-working week for me.
Glad you’re feeling a little better . . . though I hope you slept some last night!

Glad you liked the movie- I did too. Thanks for the birthday wishes– it was a great day!
When I was b-day shopping for Mike back in January, the nearest Christian bookstore had a poster up about it, but it wasn’t out yet.
We like football– I’m sure we will like this movie. I’ll have to see if I can rent it, or maybe just buy it outright!
Hope all of you (including your cast) feel better soon!
RYC: Not mainstreamed for everything, perhaps for a science class or something.
Sounds like a good movie to watch.
Ryc: I agree with the clothes going missing….that has happened at our house before. Usually they completly forget about it!
Mr. M. would like that movie. I probably would too for different reasons. I can’t follow football action at all. Mr. M. has a lonely time of it if he is watching a game, unless some of the kids are home. A few seem to understand it. Basketball is so much more straightforward.
RYC: Too bad he didn’t have a daughter named Lois, and a four word street name is simply too long! Where’s the creativity?
I think I’ve recently heard about that movie! You make it sound really great, maybe B. & I will rent it this weekend.
My hubby & I are going to The Pasta Shoppe this weekend on a date!!Woo-Hoo! It’s my favorite place to go for a romantic & REALLY nice dinner (the only place to eat escargot……wonderful!). It was a place we visited several times when we were first married (when we put everything on credit cards!), before more than 2 children had arrived, and it’s been about 6 years since we visited it…. I think.
Oh, I’m feeling much better today! (Thank You, Jesus!!) Have a great weekend!! We’ll be busy painting, (again!) putting up light fixtures, and basically getting our home in “viewing” condition…… in case we decide to move!
