  • Girl’s Weekend

This morning, the menfolk in my house packed up and headed out to the Big 10 wrestling championships in Lansing, MI.  Last year, they did the same, except they drove to some I state–Illinois? Iowa? Indiana?  I forget.  After an eight or so hour drive, the boys were glad to jump in the hotel pool and dine on Little Caesar’s Pizza, a real treat for us, as there is not a local Little Caesar’s.

So, that left the girls at home, all by their lonesomes. What to do? What to do?  Hee hee. As if we needed any ideas!  Since the men took the digital camera, I thought it would be fun to pull out the ol’ film camera and blow a roll on our girl’s weekend, taking pictures of all the things we did and places we went.  But, first, I had to get some film!

We began the day in a beauty parlor way, straightening LibbyK’s hair. Next, we headed out for some shopping: Walmart for that roll of film and some movie snacks, Burlington Shoes where we all got a pair of dressy, summer sandals, Barnes and Noble where I got Lauren Willig on the clearance table and LibbyK got an American Girl sleepover book, and then to a 4:00 showing of Night at the Museum.  Lib and I found it quite fun, but Little Miss found it boring, too loud, and a bit intense in spots.  After gorging ourselves on popcorn at the movies, we weren’t quite ready to eat supper, so we shopped some more!

First, we headed to Office Depot where I got some nice paper to print my blog from last year. (It will be my first real attempt at hand bookbinding.). Next stop was JC Penney’s where I ordered dress pants for Hunter (as a skinny waist/34 inseam isn’t carried in the store for some reason…). I also got a spring jacket for me and a swimsuit for LibbyK and saved $30 in addition to the almost half-price sales.  By this point, Little Miss declared herself to be hungry, so we headed to Baby’s.

Do you remember those “But they don’t take American Express” commercials put out a few years ago which highlighted various places which took Visa but not AEx?  Baby’s was one of the places featured in a commercial. It’s a fun, 1950′s style diner in downtown State College.  We had shakes and fried things, played Rock Around the Clock and Great Balls of Fire on the jukebox,  and then headed for home, dodging college students clad in green, wending their way to the first bars of the evening with “It’s two weeks before St. Patrick’s Day, but the 17th is during spring break, so let’s get really drunk tonight” shining from their eyes.

I am planning a NyQuil apertif (er, after-tif?) and some cuddly jammies.  I’m glad we did the 4:00 movie showing as DayQuil can only take a body so far. Plus, I need to be refreshed for Saturday’s fun: LibbyK’s flute recital and my mom coming over for said recital and to take us shopping and out to eat.  Fun, fun, fun, and there’s no one even here to take my T-bird away!

So, how many of you smuggle candy or water bottles into the movies?

  • I can’t remember the last time I went to see a movie…I do remember bringing lunch one time, many a year ago.

  • I smuggle snacks, capri suns and candy into the movies, because with four munching kiddos the snack bar costs as much as the tickets!!! Once, before I was a “smuggler”….we went to the movies with three kiddos and the tickets for our family was $46.50. My husband about had a cow right on the spot…..when I came back from the snack bar (we made the unfortunate mistake of not eating beforehand) and told my husband that our 5drinks, 3 popcorns and 2 boxes of candy was more than $35.00 he just about went into cardiac arrest!! Since that day- we’re proud smugglers of dollar store candy! (lol)

Your weekend sounds like super fun!!! Can’t wait to see your pictures!!

    Have a great weekend! -Cass

  • The first time I ever smuggled was with my mom – I was very surprised that she suggested it! My boyfriend (now husband) used to take advantage of his large coat pockets for us, but now we usually do dinner and a movie so there’s no need for snacks. Plus I’m just too frugal to handle the astronomical prices… though occasionally it’s a fun treat. :) Sounds like you’re having a great time with your girls; enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  • Sounds like a fabulous weekend!  And my feeling is that if it fits in your purse its not smuggling food in…..

  • Hmmmmm, I don’t think I’ve ever smuggled anything into a movie theater . . . but I’ve smuggled a water bottle onto a “no liquid allowed” travel bus! (I did, however, check with someone “higher up” in charge . . . she said as long as I kept it hidden in my backpack I was ok — however, I got so thirsty from the heat of the day and walking through the National Zoo in 3 inch heels (we were supposed to wear business casual!) that I took my bottle out and drank anyway. I survived!)

  • Square dancing, you said? Alas, now I am well and truly green with envy. However, Stephen and I were talking about meeting with Nathan over spring break. Also, I think you have a NyQuill problem. Do we need to get you on the twelve steps?

  • I smuggled two friends into the drive-in in my trunk once.  Does that count?

  • Oh, I’ve definitely smuggled candy into movie theatres.  I feel so nice and sly.  And I’m kind of on a spring break. I came back Wednesday after classes and I leave again on Sunday. I’ll be back for almost a week and a half for Easter though, so I suppose that’s my “real” spring break.

  • Sounds like such fun!

And yes, Eton’s just a high school (and an elementary school) but it’s amazing how important its place in British education is! I can’t think of any analogous situation in the US.

  • Sounds like a fun weekend. Being the good Christians that we are *cough, cough*, we’ve bought candy & drinks beforehand, but ate & drank in the car before entering and after leaving the theatre. Just didn’t feel right smuggling. Doesn’t mean we might not do it sometime in the future! We hardly go to the theatre since there are 7 of us, and with the age span in the kids, what would entertain my 6 year old, would put my teenagers to tears! Usually on a few of us go at a time. We are the libraries best dvd customers!!! Sometimes the rental shop.

  • I never thought about printing out previous blogs before. Please post how, what materials, finished product, etc. Neat idea!

  • I never knew you could print out blogs – that’s so cool. I would love to be able to do that with my blog so I could add it to my collection of my journals.
And I’m a candy smuggler – I figure with the movies tickets, popcorn & drinks I’ve spent enough. My boys hate it though – they content themselves with the popcorn and drinks.

(PS…I found your site through “OurLittleSchoolRoom”.)

  • Memories in the making for you girls this weekend. Looking forward to the recital! Enjoy the rest of the weekend. I forgot to reply– YES, we would LOVE to eat out with you and TGD!

  • mike and ike in a theater, $3.50 or 2/$1.00 at Dollar General. hmm, let me think?  If it doesn’t fit in your purse, get a bigger purse.

If you think a 34 inseam is hard to find, wait til he reaches the 38 inseam that his uncle has.  I wear a 34 inseam, but unfortunitely I don’t have to worry about the skinny waist anymore.  Although 32/34 can sometimes be hard to find. And as a heads up, Cabelas “talls” inseam only goes to 34″.

  • oh yeah, smuggling candy and water is the only way to go…

    have a great weekend!

  • I enjoy those “girl’s nights and weekends”! Enjoy your rest of the weekend! And it’s never to early to start wearing green.

  • I’ve been guilty of smuggling things into movie theaters before.

Wow, it sounds like you guys are having heaps of fun!!! Girl stuff is always fun.

I wish Libby well on the flute recital. I have a violin recital today I’m trying to forget about, hehe.

    Love ya!

P.S. Sometime when I find the chance, I’ll give you a personal update on what’s going on with Sam.

  • I have so much to comment on….

First a drive from SC to Lansing brings back so many memories for El Mano and I.  Next when did SC get a Burlington Shoes?  We never really liked Baby’s, if I remember correctly it’s the place on Sower’s (or somewhere around there) that has tiny burgers.  And finally, I don’t smuggle in candy to the movies (not for any moral reason) I just think there is something about the experience in paying $4 for a small box of snow-caps!!!

Be sure to post pictures of said “Girl’s Weekend”!!!

  • We managed a canister of peanuts and a liter of Dr. Pepper once…..;D

  • Sounds like a fun weekend!  Enjoy!

    No smuggling here, though.

  • One time in junior high me an my friends tried smuggling candy in.  They didn’t hide theirs well and it was confiscated when they took our tickets.  I got through that part but when we started to partake of the candy after sitting down one of the workers spotted us.  I had to get up and take the bag out of the theatre.  They said it would be there when the movie was over.  It wasn’t.

  • I haven’t ben to the movies in ages, but when I would go I almost always smuggled candy in.  As for house stuff, I may post tonight to fill everyone in.  We’re waiting for an answer!

  • Wow! What a day! Sounds like so much fun!

Nice profile picture. Have a great weekend!

  • This is crazy! I know started a comment on your fun Girl’s Weekend last night!  This happens to me all the time! I start writing you, get called away, write some more, have to make lunch ;) , write again… change, reword, make more comments, ….. OH, MY! look at the time!….. then, somewhere in the evening, I think I sent the mile long gab session to you, and, *poof!* it’s gone!  Ah, well.

Your night sounds so fun!! I can’t wait ’til my girls get old enough to go out with and actually feel like I’m going “out with the girls”!  But I do HATE going out on excursions like that when I’m not feeling well.  I’m a terrible sick person.  I can’t think of anything but my (fill in the blank with whatever the latest sickness is affecting!) and am a crab! When does hubby & boys get back?

I’m really excited! I found out that out cable has a free fitness section that has a bunch of different styles & levels of workouts we can use.  There’s even a “Kids Walk” one that I taped for my girls to do whenever they come to me when there’s bad weather and say, “Mom! We’ve gotta do something to get rid of all this excess energy!” (they’re so funny!).  I should say, “Good! Scrub the floors!!”, but they already did that, usually! ;)   I’m doing (ahem!)…. belly dancing (blushing profusely!).  I’m sure I look like an ostrich prancing around with legs, arms & belly flailing about, but, it’s kinda fun to just shake everything around and not feel like I’m doing anything high impact or difficult…. well, not tooo difficult!  (I’m writing about excercise while eating mint chocolate chip ice cream……………… right out of the carton! ha! — honest, this is a RARE thing!)

O.k…… I gotta go….. have a great rest of the evening! God bless ya and keep ya and make His face shine on ya!!! (I can never think of a spiritual closing that doesn’t sound trite, religious, or is over used! That’s the best I could come up with, but, it’s sincere!)

  • I always bring things into the movies … usually drinks.

What grade do you teach? My mom’s a teacher too.

  • We used to do Girls’ Weekends when my dad and brother went hunting.  Those were wild times.  It sounds like you are using the time well.

  • I smuggled a water bottle into the theater once so one of the kids could take medication on schedule.

  • Mary,

RYC: Me..craft shows? LOL. What’s in your water bottle? NO, I don’t do craft shows. They’ve laugh me right out the door.

As for smuggling candy or water into the theater…YOU BET!

    God bless you.

  • The girls tried it too, I think I was the only one who didn’t.  Isaac has a 103 degree fever, so I get to stay home and take care of him.

  • Babies and theme parks? Sounds like a portent. And somehow, I’m not surprised to find out about your regency-romance dream. Was the Good Doctor out to steal some mathematicians secret research.

  • The book we are using is just a modern English version of John Bunyun’s work.  She did an exceptional job of writing it in today’s English without losing the tone of the original.  You can check out her books at http://www.Cherylford.com .  I HIGHLY recommend it!  Looking forward to your Amy Carmichael poem! :)

  • By-the-way, sounds like a great day and I am a BIG believer in NyQuil!

    :P

  • Sounds like a fun weekend.  We have taken candy into the movies.  Like others have said, it is too expensive to not.

  • You should have seen me for Star Wars, Episode 3. The contraband we snuck in would have stocked a Unimart.

Also, yes, the Sunday School class called me Mr. Kurt.

  • we just walk over to the nearest Big Lots and buy our weight in sour skittles and mini candy bars!(if you can feign heaviness, a litre of soda is always good under the jacket!)

  • Choose one of your best profile photos and use it to join ItsJustLooks.com for FREE!

  • haha wow i’ve never been called a marvelous muffin before! ;^) thanks for the B-Day wishes you posted on my b-day 3/4

  • ooo all the time… but the local theater people don’t care : )   Baby pictures still on there way; I have an excuse, and yall will hear it eventually  : P

    Daniel

  • RYC  You totally crack me up!  No wonder you’re a writer–101 Jeans would surely be a winner!

  • I take food and water.

I have not been sucked into an alternate dimension, just really busy and sick and very tired!!  How are you?  Sorry I haven’t commented and posted.  I will probably do 3,000 this week to make up for it!

    Any Holy Spirit comments?

  • Thanks for the ideas about keeping the house straight.  Sounds like a great weekend.  About the smuggling…my daughter thinks its horrible that I would even suggest such a thing, but I think if it fits in my purse it’s nobody’s business. (I know, I know….this concept could be so abused) She was so nervous that we were breaking the rules I thought she was going to tell the ticket-taker to check my purse.  If only those high standards will last through her teen years!!!!Hope you feel better soon!

  • Okay, I think I’ve subscribed.

And you have a comment from my sister–Edith.

Your weekend sounds like lots of fun. Did you get to do everything you had planned?

  • I confess I have smuggled candy into the theatre. But it was for a noble purpose (my stomach).
