Tavern and Tickets
On Saturday, we ordered our tickets for our trip to England! We are to leave July 7 from Pittsburgh and return on July 22. Woo! I’ve always, always, always wanted to go to England, and, Lord willing, I shall be going this summer! We found a nice hotel in Reading (where TGD’s math conference is the first week), and I found a nice bed and breakfast in Bath. We don’t have reservations at either place yet, as we just want to check a detail or two before committing. Also on Saturday, TGD took me out to one of my favorite restaurants, The Tavern. It’s a local place, very Penn State, with a median dining age of at least 53 years old. They had one of my favorite dishes on the menu, too, Beef tips over noodles in a Burgundy wine sauce. (The menu is printed daily at The Tavern.) We also ended the meal with chocolate chip cheesecake. It was a delightful time to eat and flirt with my husband.
Little Miss is sitting on my lap as I type this, runny-eyed and nosed and coughing. Yes, the diseases just linger on here. Grinner and LibbyK are coughing and tired, still. But, I can’t bear the thought of loosing another day of school to this illness! (Unless, of course, I come down with it. Then the whole world will just have to stop.)
I finally got my “Christmas” cards out to church friends this weekend. I made them on the computer (just for something else to go in the envelope with the family picture), and they read: Our Christmas cards were late this year. Now February is already here. So with good wishes we do say… Have a very merry President’s Day!
When was the latest you ever sent out Christmas cards? Do you even bother?

Thanks for the card. It made us laugh! I hope your family feels better soon.
That is so not fare! Not only is The Tavern my favorite resturant in State College, but it’s my ALL TIME favorite resturant. Even though we live in a big city full of resturants we have yet to find one we really like. Tex-Mex is just not my cup of tea.
Speaking of tea…I really hope you enjoy England! That is so exciting, who is watching the kids?
You will have to promise to keep as best of a blog as you can (or, at least, a “mental blog”) of your British journeys. I can’t wait to hear all about it!
I’d suggest starting with “Girl Meets God” by Lauren Winner . . . it sounds teenagey and all that stuff, but it really is not. It’s a memoir about an orthodox Jewish girl (mid-20s), her life, and her conversion to Christianity. Then, I’d read “Mudhouse Sabbath”, which I’m currently reading now. It’s about Jewish practices that we might consider implementing into our Christian lifestyles . . . like actual, better, observance of the Sabbath. It’s an intriguing and excellent read.
Thanks for your prayers!
IAMSOJEALOUS!!! i’VE aLWAYS wANTED tO gO tO eNGLAND!! (caps are on…. just to be different!) I really have always wanted to go, though. Will you be touring around while you’re there? One of these days, I’d REALLY like to go to “the Emerald Isle”! Your trip sounds simply splendid!! I hope you have the time of your life! How will you be able to focus on anything else until July 7th??!!
I’m just so sorry your people are still sick! That’s so hard, I know. I know it’s hard to call off school, but maybe you can just do a couple of subjects a day until everyone is back to normal again?
I’m so glad you got to go out with your hubby! I think I’ve heard of that place from my husband or his family.
I’m laughing out loud here about your Christmas cards!!! The verse is so funny and I think it’s hysterical that you’re sending them out for President’s Day! Don’t get me wrong, though, I think it’s FABULOUS!! You’re inspiring me!! Who knows….. I may just send out my Christmas cards for Memorial Day this year!!! Thanks for helping me to think “outside the box”!!
….. I’m off to play Sequence with my man!
Oh, your trip sounds so cool. This is actually really neat as just last week my friend Lori asked me if I wanted to plan a trip to England with her (her second, my first) and of course I said YES! I’ve always wanted to go and just came to the point that if I don’t just do it and plan for it it’s never going to happen. We’re tentatively talking about going about a year and a half from now…giving me plenty of time to save $$!
England sounds positively delightful! One of my friends is living there right now… found herself an Englishman… got engaged… and is coming back to the States to get married in September. And I get to be the photographer!!
Okay, that was a rather odd intro for a comment. But anyway — England sounds fabulous! Please promise to take a zillion pictures, since I think that’s the only way I’ll be getting there any time soon.
I went to Ireland in 2003 with some dear family friends — got to celebrate my 19th birthday there too. Spent an afternoon taking pictures in a park with a statue of Oscar Wilde. Quite entertaining, really.
And so I’m rambling. I hope your family gets healthy again and that you all have a delightful week.
Mary,
I didn’t even send out Xmas cards this year and it’s the first year in many we were buried in cards that were sent to us. Go figure!
I can’t wait to see what I’m going to make with my saws either, lol.
God bless you.
Cynthia
Love the “Presidents’ Day cards!” The latest I have sent Christmas cards is probably the week of the holiday. I must admit, though, I have have a few years where I just didn’t send any. We have a snow make-up day today…so no “happy” in the Presidents’ Day here!
Be Blessed! Susan
It sounds like you will have a wonderful time…I would love to visit England some day too. You will have to keep a wonderful diary for all of your xanga friends
I think it’s great that you had such a nice time with your husband. It’s great to get away, just to relax a bit.
Good for you for getting out your Christmas cards, even if they were late. I can’t say I’ve ever been late on ours because I am sort of a Christmas geek here, lol.
God bless and take care…..
I’m so glad that you’re going to get to take your big trip this summer! I’m sure that you’ll have a great time.
Christmas cards? What are they?
APRIL. That’s when I sent them out last year. I am hoping to get them out before APRIL this year!!
I had the letter all written by the beginning of Dec. Go figure. Hopefully I will be able to get out a Spring letter or something before we move. Christopher says–just wait until we have a new address, then we can kill two birds with one stone. It’s looking more and more likely to be Christmas in July!
Corrine
I say ‘better late than never’.
I hope you all feel better!
oh that is so cool! That is my dream!
I think it is great that you are doing your christmas cards. I haven’t done it yet and might not, but I was thinking I should before Easter if I am going to.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek! Funness!!!!!
Christmas cards — This year?? But since I haven’t done it yet, it may be “won’t bother”. Of course, I hope to include our change of address but we don’t have a land line yet, so I’m waiting on the installer guy for that bit of info.
As to your trip, we LOVED Bath and stayed in a B&B right in the middle of town. Very convenient but a bit noisy at night since we could hear the noise from the bars that had their tables outside. I’d love to know the one you are considering. We also went to church at the Abbey right on the main square. It was the last Sunday for the priest there and his going away sermon was the story of how he became a Christian. A very strong gospel message. I have to say we were a bit surprised but quite delighted. Don’t know a thing about the bloke who replaced him.
I can’t remember the name of the B & B where we stayed in Bath but I’m almost positive that the Cresent Bath House was our number one choice but they were booked. We got all our recommendations from Rick Steves’ guidebook to England. Are you familiar with him? I highly recommend him if you want to see things off the beaten track (and hints for seeing things on the beaten path without standing in long lines). Our guide book is packed away but I’ll ask my Beloved and my father who both have better memories than I do. They may remember the name of the place. Oh, and I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it unless you get a back room because of the noise.
Great idea on the “Christmas” cards! The latest for me has been to send them on Christmas Eve, so they are at least received before New Years.
I’m still working on our January newsletter…. (ok, not working at all– just procrastinating!).
RYC: My sunglasses only cost $98. The regular glasses frames were only $110, but that didn’t include the lenses– go figure. That was another ?$90? maybe, and I’m not sure what the exam was– probably $35-40. Last time I got glasses at Walmart (in Lebanon), they only charged me what the frames cost– lenses were included. I was shocked this time!
Ahhhh, the English. Only people I know who prefer their beer warm and their beef cold. Spent about four weeks there when I was stationed in Germany in the mid seventies with the Army (not all at one time).
No, I can’t even imagine Jesus as a soldier.
Sorry, but I’m not going to take my sister out any time soon…
Love the card idea! Hey, you are reading one of my favorite books! My favorite Amy Carmichael poem: “I pray my way, but when in me, myself I rise and long for something otherwise, then Holy Spirit take sword and spear and slay.” Happy Tuesday! I hope things get a little less sniffly around your house.
Absolutely! I won’t be able to stay through Monday (blasted classes) but I could definitely make the weekend! Maybe even arrive friday and get in some quality chillage time with the driver-to-be if it’s all right with the hosts!
ohman… that’s an awesome Christmas card: ima havta borrow that sometime (when society starts expecting those hateful, lil letters from me).
Me
Most of the time I never get around to sending cards, no matter how well intentioned. This year my hubby wrote the Christmas letter, printed it, addressed envelopes, and mailed them (on time!) Woah! As for myself, I once sent out a Valentine’s letter, so I’m pretty close to your timing.
I’d love to see England, too, but it involves travel.
The latest I’ve sent out Christmas cards is just before the first of January. By then, I take a chance that most people think they’ve received one from me and just forgot.
Hooray for coming to England!!! Will you be coming by Cambridge at all? I could possibly recommend churches in Bath and Reading, as my old roommate is from Bath and another girl from my church is from Reading, and I believe they both came from ‘living’ evangelical churches in their respective cities. I know you’ll have a wonderful time… I’m hoping to finish writing my thesis is July, but it’s anybody’s guess what I’ll be doing when you’re here… it would be fun to get together at some point, though!
Enjoy your time in jolly ol’ England! There are still two major trips I would like to take before I leave this earth….England, Ireland & Scotland and then to Greece. We’ve been to Israel and our own “Reformation Tour” through Germany and Italy. I would love to do that again. But these things do cost money!! My hubby is working on his Ph.D. and will graduate from Trinity Theological Seminary in conjunction with Cantebury Christ Church University so maybe we will visit in 3 years.
I love the poem for your presidents day cards… I never seem to get out my Christmas cards. I just found 3 on my desk that only needed stamps to be sent. I say oh, well I talk to them quite often – I guess I’ll save the cards for next year?
