A Little Spice
Sometimes you need a change in your life, something new to think on. I’ve felt a touch of this for a while, and I did something about it. I bought myself a new computer CD of 4,000 fonts. Yes, that’s right. Instead of simply writing something in good, ‘ol Comic Sans or Arial, I can now choose from 4,000 other options. Life is looking preeeety nice.
I’m currently reading Special Topics in Calamity Physics. It’s an odd book. I don’t really like disengaged main characters with complex interior emotions. Blah. Plus, how many more teenage angst books can I take? Give me a happy Cinderella story! EDIT–I finished the book last night. Around page 438 (really), the book got interesting and became worthy of the “mystery” label some librarian had blithely affixed to its spine. For about 70 pages, I was unaware of the time. And then it ended.Do I recommend this book? Eh, maybe. It had some quirky characters and eventually an interesting plot line. I certainly wouldn’t read it again. But, if you have hours to kill and a desire to read it, by all means!
Here are some people I’d like for you to meet.
Elizabeth Ann Linley (and her brother Thomas)
Richard Brinsley Sheridan
Their story is the one I want to write.

You visited Christine’s first?!
Hello! I’m glad to see you are breaking out of the mold of the basic fonts that come with your computer. I have to admit that I am a font nerd and something of a visual designer; I sort of have a thing against some of the more common fonts! Have fun with your 4,000. If you want to play with more fonts (for free), my favorite free font site is http://www.fontface.com.
I’ve seen you comment on various blogs that I read (namely LordJabez and StarofLorien) so I’ve started stopping by your site. I’ve enjoyed what I have read so far; keep up the good posts.
A pox on teenage angst. Also, at the risk of being told to get my mind out of the gutter – Elizabeth Linley looks almost like she’s pulling down her shirt.
I can hardly wait for you to share of some of your new fonts! God bless you.
Cynthia
I have wanted to read that book since I sold it to someone in the bookstore. Mainly, I just wanted to read it because the chapter titles were taken from classic books. Other than that, I know nothing. You’ll have to let me know your final thoughts…
i like your method for spicing up your life! im not sure that’d do it for me though haha
ryc: We like surprises!
That book sounds like a weird science book, who’d have guessed it was fiction? Oh, well. Enjoy your new fonts.
I agree…sometimes we need just a little lift in life. I know that I do as well. It doesn’t have to be anything big, something small will do. So enjoy those new fonts
RYC: Thanks for praying for Spencer and asking about him. He seems to be doing better except for his cough. I really appreciate all the prayers from everyone.
I might have to check out that book you read. I like a challenge of figuring things out when I read.. =)
Hello…my name is Trapdoorspider…and, I am a font addict. Just be careful with your fun fonts if you are sending a document or email to someone who may not have them. I have found that sometimes when the exact look you were going for is ruined due to a substitute font — it can be a little disappointing.
Oh, the fun of fonts! (And the frustration of fonts, too!) I prefer the basic Times New Roman and Arial (10 point only), but I do have fun with more unusual ones when I lay out Excelsior issues. I feel like I’ve earned a victory each time I find another one that’s “just right” for the article and the look I’m going for on each page.
That sounds like a good gift for Sylvia (the font CD). She’s downloaded a lot of fonts from the computer, has tons of fonts memorized ( poining to a billboard “look Mom that’s Lucida console” – or whatever it’s called!) and adores old script/calligraphy type fonts. Where’d ya get it?
Have you ever read any Jasper Fforde? Awesome books, but not for everyone.
Just for that, you’re tagged.
So you’re going to write a book sometime? I wish you would. I’d love to read it!
I love Fonts I will have to look for that CD. marlo
My writing study is something I’m organizing on my own. I would probably call it something like “Advanced Fiction Writing”. I already studied for three years with professional mentors through the Christian Writers Guild, so I feel like I have a very good foundation to build upon. I wish the Guild had further study opportunities, because I would definitely go that route, but at this time they do not. So I’m doing my own thing, for the moment.
Nope- The only reason I’m playing viola is because our group needed a violist. And it’s basically the same, just a different clef.
