  • Fifteen Years Later...

The pageant is over. TGD was in the Curwensville Methodist Church’s Christmas pageant, The Search for Peace. My step-grandma wrote the play, and they’ve been performing it for 47 years. It’s turned into a community event, and some people have been in their roles for well over 20 years!  James filled the part of the blind beggar for all four performances.  He sang Some Children See Him a capella with children of different races and looked quite filthy and blind while doing so. Here are two shots of him.  The first was taken the last time he performed in the pageant, in 1991. He’s holding Nathan.  The second shows him this year, with Nathan. Oh, how time changes things!

David and Michael head to Florida with my mom and John tomorrow. Michael has been counting down the days until this Disney World trip for about a year.  I’m sure he’ll get a bit homesick, if only tonight. But, they will have so much fun!

I’m excited that so many people are interested in the Pride and Prejudice chat.  Here are some questions to get you thinking.

    1. Why do you think Austen starts the novel with Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and their marriage? Is their marriage a happy one? Why do you think it is or is not?  Use comments from the novel, when possible, to make your point.

    2. Many people think that Pride and Prejudice is a romance novel.  However, in romance novels, the hero is normally portrayed right from the start as a good guy.  How does this differ from a “regular” romance novel?  How is Pride and Prejudice similar to a “chick-lit” novel?  How would you class this novel?

    3. What sort of person is Mrs. Bennet? Is she really as awful as she is usually portrayed to be?  What are her good points?

If you have any other questions or insights, please share them! Also, if you are thinking of becoming “an expert” on a character, do let us know which one you are considering so we can look forward to the fun.

  • Those are great pictures!  The guys must be excited about their trip.  Are you going to be boysick this week?

  • WOW!! How fun to play that part for so many years!!! :) It’s neat that your grandma wrote it and it’s still being performed.

Thanks for your comments…I’m not sure if we’re the type of family you read about in magazines…unless thier PSYCHIATRIC magazines!! (LOL)

  • Great pics.  On a good night I can be pretty competative with games, but I just did not do well Friday.  We played “Name That Tune” and I was playing like a crazy women trying to name them in two notes.  Hey, I’m going to have to come back to the discussion questions later.  I’m always amazed at how much I enjoy reading P&P…even for the zillionth time. :)

  • Excelsior is almost done . . . almost. It’s due Tuesday and I still have the back page, the front page, and the table of contents to format. Of course I still have to write my article (I do that last for some reason . . . I like it that way) and proofread. But, by Tuesday night, it will be a “trouble out of sight.” And, I’ll be very, very glad!

I think Nathan beat me in height like 10 years ago . . . such is life.

    –K.

  • Ah, Katie shouldn’t feel so bad, I’m taller than a lot of people. And I look dorky in that second picture there…:nervous:

  • Why thank you.:) I certainly enjoyed getting to know all of you better plus your extended family. It seems you’re all almost as crazy as my family is!;) It was an excellent weekend. I’m so glad I got to be a part of all the happenings.

  • TGD looks alot different!

    So does Nathan….

  • hhm…..Mr. S. looks cleaner in the first picture, and the hunter has grown a wee bit since then. great seeing you guys the other day! it was a……’peaceful’ pageant, no?

  • We loved hanging out with you too! Thanks again for all you did for Kathryn and for asking her to play. I love those pics- what in change in both guys!

  • I plan on commenting on P&P tomorrow, but it’s getting late here, & I need to get some rest.

Is is just me, or does it seems like no one is commenting on P&P?….. I’ll read down further, maybe they’re commenting on your last post……. I know lots of people said they’d like to join!

  • Wow!  You are right……..there is alot of difference in the two pictures!  The play sounds wonderful :)   I hope the guys have a terrific (and safe) time on their trip!  Sherry

  • wow, amazing pictures…

  • Both my Daughter and a good friend are P&P nuts, one for the original and one for the remake of the movie, but the good friend loves the book and Colin….hense the title. I am finishing my Masters and contemplating PhD, so I doubt I will add P&P to my list to do…

  • I have been teaching for 20 years almost all of them in Special Education. I am 2 courses away from my Masters of Special Ed., graduation in May. I am trying to decide which track I will take if I go ahead for my PhD…not administration and not toward the psychology side of things. I want to teach educators (regular and special) how to modify and accomodate for kids in thier classrooms and how to help educate the families that they have represented in their classrooms. My big decision is if I can do this for 2 1/2 more years right now….I’m getting a little tired of working full time, being the maid at home and a student….My family has been great, but it has been a sacrifice (oh yeah, and there is the money issue….)

  • I think TGDJ should keep the beard…any chance of that?

  • Reading P & P sounds like a lot of fun. I have never read the story, but have seen all versions; the A&E being my favorite (and have watched it many times). However, there isn’t time right now for me to join you all…Have fun reading and thanks for asking.

  • They both look so young in that first picture! Did you rob the cradle, Mary?   How fun to have the comparison, well, fun for NATHAN.  I know how it goes.  TGD looks much more professorial now.  I am so looking forward to doing the Pride and Prejudice discussions.  I like your questions.  I have to find a book somewhere.  I know we have one but I can’t find it.  I may have to try the Library, and around here I’m not sure it will be easy to find.

  • I want to answer those questions just as soon as I read the chapters.  I especially want to know what people think about Mary. In the movie she looked like a perfect match for Mr. Collins.
