Go, Go! Gooooo Gettysburg!
I’m getting quite excited as Wednesday we head to Gettysburg for a tour. I learn to love history more each day, and I’ve been wanting to head to Gettysburg for a number of years now. Unfortunately, we’ve only made it up to the Pilgrims in history this year, so we’re skipping ahead a bit to cram some movies and books into our week. It is my blushing nightmare to have us arrive at the tour (all homeschoolers) and have one of my children say, “Didn’t Gettysburg happen in World War 2?” We’re watching shows I taped from The History Channel, reading various books, and I also rented the movie Gettysburg, although I recall it being somewhat dull.
I’m reading a biography of James Cook, the Captain Cook who “discovered” Hawaii. It’s well-written and entertaining, and I’ve never read a book with such thick pages. They’re like card stock, almost, making it a tactilely pleasant experience as well as a mentally enjoyable one.
Tonight we head to my mom’s in good ol’ Curwensville to watch the last high school home game. It is to be in the 40s or lower, so I’ve already determined the girls and I will stay at her house and maybe watch a movie. We’ll spend the night and go out for breakfast at The Branding Iron on Saturday. (Yummy French toast!) It’s always a trade off. Sleep in as late as I want or go out to breakfast? I always choose the breakfast.
Saxon is on a halt for now. I guess they want the writers to go more slowly (?), so I’ve had two Saxon-free days. (Not counting Saxon 1 and Saxon 76 which we do for school.) I do appreciate all your prayers on my behalf. It took a number of days, but I think I’m back to my old self. (Hey, is that some chocolate chip ice cream?)

Didn’t Gettysburg happen during WWII??? Just kidding, have fun! Enjoy your Saxon free days, it sound like you needed it!
Glad to hear your up to ice cream again! I went to Gettysberg YEARS ago. It is a very memorable place. When my kiddos get a bit bigger, we will travel to the East for all that GREAT stuff! Have a great day!
That is so cool to be so close to all of this conutries historical places. No way can you have the only history and culture that exisits her and then steal our dude! It’s all we have! lol!
Just joshin’ have a fabulous day in that historical scene from the Korean war was it?!
Wow! I really should have paid more attention while typing that. That is what happens when you type before the sudafed and coffee kick in you nkwo?
I love Gettysburg. I love the main museum there, where you can see individual belongings and read the stories of individual soldiers and townspeople. That is where history fascinates me – in the stories of the people. I do not like just reading pure facts from a book, but to experience it through different eyes and walk where it happened…. I hope you all have a blast while you are there!
Gettysburg the movie is dull!!? NO WAY. It is my second favorite of all time (Arlington Road #1). It really helps to watch that before taking the tour because then you have a sense of what battles happened where. We used to run a cross country race in Gettysburg every year. We would watch the movie on the bus from Cedarville, then tour the battlefields the day before the race. Good times.
I was just about to complain about the fact that we were forced to watch the movie Gettysburg on the way to that meet. I guess some of us enjoyed that time. The touring of Gettysburg was much more entertaining.
LOL!!! Yes, show up with your “homeschooled kids” and say THAT!!! What a hoot!! We all know it happened in W.W.I!!! …….Yeah, I’m a homskoolin’ momma…. ain’t chew? (I am kidding!) We went to Gettysburg a few years back while visiting my in-laws. It’s really interesting! I really love Pennsylvania altogether. I’m a sucker for mountains, colorful rocks and trees!!
I prefer to sleep in as late as I want AND go out to breakfast!
(sniff! sniff! I think my cookies are done!…. gotta go…..)
mmmm! I just made….. and ate…… some peanut butter & choc. chip cookies! yumm! Boyseverywhere got me on the kick! She mentioned them yesterday and (…. just like a little monkey!) I had to make them today!! I made some look like Teddybears for the girls!
Well…. I’ve spent way too much time on this page (interruptions galore!!) and need to move on! Glad you’re getting a much needed rest from the Saxon typing!! Have a good weekend!!
Hey Mary! Can’t believe you haven’t been to Gettysburg before. You will love it! Pay attention when you watch the movie “Gettysburg” as they filmed it on location. If you want a neat place for lunch, go to the Farnsworth House (they have a website)–there is movie memorabilia displayed there and the hotel rooms (on the second floor) are on the most haunted places list. We have been to the battlefields countless times and found the visitors center to be really neat. It’s 2 floors of artifacts from the war and it’s free…the kids would enjoy seeing the war artifacts, uniforms, cannons, guns, etc. If we lived closer I could give you our audio car tour on cd for you to listen to as your drive the battlefield. There are lots of places to get out and hike if the weather is nice. Throughout G’burg there are 13 (I think) buildings/houses with cannonballs still lodged in them–look for an American flag displayed as a clue. You probably won’t have time to do this, but Boyd’s Bears is south of town–your girls would love going there!!! Hope you have nice weather and a great time! Thile
Spring break trip? I’m game.
Yay Gettysburg!!! I’ve been there a couple times, and thoroughly enjoyed it every time.
WWII, psh.
Prima is an appreciator of the physical attributes of a good book too.
Don’t faint Mary… I am going to bake, yes bake from scratch, chocolate chip cookies. Iced white chocolate chip oatmeal and chocolate m&m too. Now that I have some counter space I might start to like baking again.
The house is starting to look and feel like home. The basement needs some extra work. I did have a nicer basement in the old house. I need to install my hanging shelving to store all the extra stuff. First I need too vacuum all the dirt and cobwebs. YUCK! Brad needs to finish the drywall in the kids rooms. Does Nathan, the drywall expert, want to visit? Then there is cleaning the exposed brick in the entrance way. fun, fun, fun.
No way “Gettysburg” is boring. I’ve watched it a few times. I still get chills when Chamberlain yells “Bayonets!!” One thing we noticed on one of the several times my house trained family went to Gettysburg was that while it was filmed on location, the little short hill where the battle of Little Round Top actually happened couldn’t be the dramatic, 200 yard hill depicted in the movie (I guess you can make your own judgment on this). Even so, it makes for a great movie.
