  • Birthdays and Plays

Ah, the string was broken. I had 11 comments for the past three posts, and then it ended.  I’ll not complain!

I thought I’d report on Libby’s 12th birthday party, and here’s a picture for the complainers.

Libby stars as the elderly Aunt Catherine

She invited a bunch of girls ages 10 to 15. She wanted to have a dress-up tea party thing, but I didn’t know that a tea party would appeal to the crowd, especially for a 7:00 p.m. start time and sleepover.  Instead, the girls all arrived in costumes, toting props.  We were going to make a Revolutionary War spy movie!  I put the roles in a bag, and the girls drew their parts (the mother, an escaped prisoner, the foreign diplomat’s wife…). Then, I made up scenes.  “_________________ is discovered by _________________ with incriminating documents.”  “A secrect meeting at night is arranged by _______________________.  ___________________ is to meet ______________ at midnight.”   We put all the roles back into the bag and drew to see who did what.

The girls had so much fun planning out where and how the scene would happen, what outfits they would wear, and so on.  Three plus hours of filming and fussing turned in to a 20 minute movie.  They were so engrossed in the project that we didn’t even have cake!   I got to film the whole thing (and direct it–imagine that!).

Speaking of plays, it looks like there might be a play this spring after all!  Bkroeker and flutemom38 approached me at church and asked if I might be willing to help them with a musical this year.  It turns out that I wrote a musical ten years ago (which needs much work), and they are enthused about that project. So, once Saxon is done, I’ll pull out The King of Peach Fuzz, a musical comedy based on the fairy tale King Thrushbeard

Tonight, I have a Saxon-free night. Since they wanted some changes to what I was writing, I turned in a new lesson today and was told, “Don’t write any more lessons until we review this one.”  So, I won’t. Yeah!!!

  • What an awesome party!  You are so creative.

It is so funny, because we have never met in person and probably never will, but you have quickly become one of the people that I most enjoy hearing from and about.  Not to be all mushy, but I am having one of the weeks where I am more of a Marianne and less of an Elinor, so if I’m having a thought I must express it!  Sometimes it is the exact reverse.

  • Yeah for taking a Saxon break! Yes, we are getting excited about the possibility of the play and we love the plot! I think it would work well with our group of kids. It is hard not to already typecast, is it not?

  • Cute picture! That party sounds like it was a blast! I wish my mom had been as creative with my parties! Oh, well, I still love her probably as much as your Libby loves you.

  • That’s just too fun!! I love that idea and will probably steal it from you one day, if you don’t mind! My girls are still a tad bit young, but, I think they will be ready soon! They are quite the play-writes themselves and love to do anything and everything creative!

I went to Emigsville, PA near York, I guess it’s in/near Lancaster….. County? I know I’ve heard about Harrisburg and Lancaster a lot when I’m there.  Are you familiar with the area?

  • That is a great picture.  My two older boys used to have so much fun making videos with friends at that age and a little older.. I’m trying to figure out how to email you with the info you requested.

  • Wow I can’t believe how much Libby looks like you!  The birthday party sounded like a lot of fun, very creative idea.  Good luck on the musical, sounds like it will be another big hit!

  • What a great party idea!!  You know it was a hit if they forgot the cake!!  That little movie you made will be quite fun to watch in about 10 years.

  • Mary, why don’t you DO something??   :)

  • a musical will be a great idea!!!   let me know if I can help!

  • It sounds like a fun party.  It is a real stretch of the imagination to think of you directing a play.

Am I the 11th comment?  Does that mean anything?

  • That sounds like such a cool party!  Give Libs some birthday wishes from me!!!

  • Fun party!!!!!!  We never grow out of “dress-up”!!!!!!

  • How splendid! I LOVE things like that!! Dress up is so very, very fun. As is making movies. That is really cool!

Thanks for your prayers for Ethan. He came home today and is doing much better, although not yet back to his normal happy self.

  • Lol, King Peach Fuzz? How hilarious. Makes me want to resume work on my own failed attempt at novelizing said story. Er, not King Peach Fuzz, King Thrushbeard.

  • I was pleased with myself with Lily’s Dora the Explorer party and we did a whole scavenger hunt for the cake, complete with Scott as “swiper”, but that’s nothing compared to what you pulled off – wow!

  • That sounds so cool!

  • What a great idea!  How very creative of you.  And it looks as if you had some great costumes!
