  • Miracles

I was just thinking about “magical” things that occur in stories and fairy tales and relating them to things that happen in the Bible.  The sun going backwards, amazing healings, people flying (caught up in a chariot of fire), UFOs (read Ezekiel), teleporting (Philip, caught up in the spirit),  and so on.  Then, I came to time travel and was stumped.

Do you think when Satan took Jesus to a high  mountain and “showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time” (Luke 3:5) is time travel?  Am I missing any other time travel episodes?  I thought about John’s vision of Revelation, but that is described as a vision and not as time travel. What do you think?

PS–I never considered “Math Nerd” thinking instead of “Mary Nerd.” Strangely, we could have been on the A-T-H path because the name I had chosen IF we ever had another girl was “Anna.”

  • OSOT (only slightly off topic) – I’ve often wondered whether John 21:25 is a veiled reference to life on other planets.

As to time travel, wouldn’t the sun going backwards qualify? I think there was an incident with Elijah or Elisha where shadows stood still. Again, didn’t time stop for a while once when the Israelites battled?

  • Interesting. Could that just be an instance of percieving various times, without actually going there? It’s difficult to infer the meaning of such language though (this has been driven home from reading translations of sundry Chinese texts and encountering uses of terms like “The Way” and “Virtue” very different from western custom).

  • I did want to write about miracles.  I remember reading in a book by LeAnn Payne that she was camping with her family in the ninteen fifties and went down to the river to get some water to wash dishes.  She was so startled she dropped her dishpan when she looked across the river and saw two Huron indians dressed like they would have been 200 years ago looking with astonishment at her.  She assumes they were experiencing the same time warp she was only in reverse, she was seeing back and they were seeing forward.  She didn’t know why God allowed her to see this except that perhaps He wanted her to really KNOW He is the God over all, even time.
