Goodness, Gracious, Great Balls of Fire!
Who remembers Schoolhouse Rock? I’ve been singing “Ooh, there’s gonna be fireworks…FIREWORKS…on the Fourth of July…” all evening. Our neighbors, for the second year in a row, put on an awesome display. It lasted at least a half an hour and was a great mix of huge, booming things and smaller, rapid-fire (but still big) fireworks. Who need the hassle of driving onto Penn State’s campus for the fourth best show in the nation? Not us, nuh-huh!
We had a great picnic today at my mom’s. It was relaxing and fun. We played pinochle and Balderdash, had a birthday party for PapaJohn, and I got to visit my Grandma Bressler in the hospital. She seemed quite good, but as the visit went on, she got rather tired and a bit forgetful. But, then again, I get muddled when I’m tired, too! After that, we went to Jordan’s game, the Tri-County All-Star playoffs, which they won.
Here’s what David drew for Papa John’s birthday present. (The pinkish glare is due to the picture frame’s reflection. Ignore it, please.)
And here’s the real dog, Molly. Pretty good likeness, eh?
Poor TGD is hard at work grading exams. He had to drive to and from Kentucky (10 plus hours each way) and then gets to sit all evening and grade. Bummer and double bummer.
As to that Kentucky trip for the International BB Gun Competition, there was good news! Nathan took third place in the nation with a score of 480/500 and first place in the sitting category (one of four shooting positions) with a score of 99/100 with nine dead-center bullseyes (also called “X-es”). He also got a perfect score on his written test as well. We were rather tickled.
So, what did you do to celebrate Independence Day?

I LOVED Schoolhouse Rock! Thanks to them, I know the preamble to the Constitution.
Happy 4th to you. Lisa
Hi Mary–meaning to write all the time to tell about our trip to America, but in the throes of life now and getting ready for Christopher to head to Afghanistan next Wednesday.
We spent our 4th on Post where we waited until 10:30 p.m. for the sky to be dark enough for some mediocre fireworks. It was also the night of the World Cup Semifinals, but Germany lost, so we didn’t drive home to horns blaring and people riding up and down the streets screaming their absolute joy, as we have been experiencing for a couple weeks now. poor Germany. We feel badly for them!! Anyway, it has been really neat to be here while this event is taking place.
So I sign off–to take a nap and try to get the children to do school on their own, since they didn’t do an y school wtih me this morning–although we had a full morning discussing how they are feeling about things–like my dad remarrying and about Christopher leaving and my mom’s death and stuff like that. VERY good talk. I am grateful and feel more blessed than ever that we homeschool.

We went to David’s folks for a picnic and then used the pool all afternoon. We had a big t-storm pass through while we ate, but made for a clear rest of the day for us to swim. I was able to relax and read, too. We didn’t go see fireworks (we usually go to Lititz) b/c more storms came through later on in the evening. We have had our share of rain for sure! I suppose you have too!!!
Since the heat index was 104 degrees we spent the majority of the day indoors. I did take Kayla to the pool early in the day, but the girls were both sleeping by 8 so no fireworks for them. Some of our neighbors were lighting off a few fireworks though, so I saw a local show as well.
glad you got to visit your grandma! sounds like you had fun!
Glad you got to enjoy some fireworks close to home…I didn’t know that kind of display was even legal!
I loved Schoolhouse Rock when I was a kid. We didn’t do much of anything on the 4th, but we relaxed and spent time as a family.
I remember School House Rock! I remember the song you’re talking about, too.
Wonderful picture of the doggie!
Happy belated Independance Day!!!

P.S. Thank you for your encouraging words on my other site.
I am going to swallow my confounded pride and start posting my story in a few weeks.
Have a lovely day.
David is a very talented artist. Please tell him that his drawing is great. We’ll have to compare portfolios some time, as I do (well, used to do!) pencil drawings as well.
We bought the dvd of Schoolhouse Rock, and people around here may break into a spontaneous rendition of “Conjunction Junction”. That is a good likeness, very impressive.
